BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport wrestling team hosted the Brockport Open to kick-off their 2018-2019 season. The Green and Gold had five wrestlers take the top spot in their respective weight-class, four more took second place and four more took third.
125 Weight Class
Sophomore,
Neiko Scarano earned the top spot in this class, defeating his first opponent in a 5-2 decision, before advancing to the finals off a 9-0 major decision. In the final bout, Scarano took the 5-4 decision to take first place.
133 Weight Class
Despite losing in his first match of the day, freshman
Elijah Sims earned three straight victories to take third place. His first win game in the form of a pin at 2:30. Following that battle, he earned a pair of decision to seal the third place mark.
141 Weight Class
This class saw two Golden Eagles meet in the finals and take the two top spots.
Donny McCoy maneuvered his way to the finals using a 16-1 technical fall and a 1:39 pin before meeting up with teammate
Zack Barker. Barker took the first matchup after an injury to the opponent. He then used a fall at 00:52 to punch his ticket to a finals battle with McCoy. Barker had the upper hand and defeated McCoy in a 7-1 decision.
149 Weight Class
Three member of the Green and Gold took the top three spots in this class. After winning his first match in a 16-0 technical fall,
Mark Hitchcock fell to teammate
Zack Brown in a 6-4 decision. Hitchcock worked his way to the third place bout and won with an impressive 14-4 major decision. Brown went on to win his next two bouts, including a faceoff with another Brockport wrestler,
Austin Reed. Reed impressed on his face to the first place match, win his previous three matches by pin fall.
157 Weight Class
Another pair of Golden Eagles met in the finals of their respective weight class, with
Ryan Snow and
Corey Farrell working their way to the end match. Each used similar methods to win matches with each recording a pin under 2:00 and a decision. When they met in the final stage, Farrell took the top spot with a nail-biting 3-2 decision.
174 Weight Class
The success continued with
Chris Eames and
Daniel Emblidge meeting in the finals. Emblidge won in a 7-2 decision in his first match, before using a pin at 4:58 secured him a spot in the final battle. Eames earned his two wins prior to the final off of a 3-1 decision and a 12-3 major decision. Eames finished with the top spot has he defeated his teammate using a 6-4 decision.
197 Weight Class
Zach Kornberg took yet another top spot for the Golden Eagles, as he defeated Joseph Yanis in his first matchup in his second matchup to advance to the final stage. Yanis eventually worked his way to a third place finish, winning his last match with a fall at 4:10. Kornberg wrapped up the 197-class with an 11-3 major decision.
Up next for Brockport, is a road invitational hosted by the University Of Mount Union. The competition will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday Nov. 10.
