Daytona, F.L. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team earned the victory in their first game of the weekend in Daytona, Florida at the Mauro Panaggio Invitational. The Green and Gold comfortably beat Gallaudet University by the final of 100-63. Brockport's overall record now stands at 6-3, while the Bison's mark drops to 1-9.
The Golden Eagles were in control the entire 40 minutes of the game. They began the first three minutes of play on a 9-0 run thanks to a dunk by
Devante Hagins and a three pointer by
Josh Nelson. Brockport kept up their fast pace of play, and grew on the lead as the game continued. Later in the half
Justin Summers threw down a huge alley-oop that was assisted by
Brandon Kennedy-Gay at the 10:47 mark. As the battle headed towards the end of the first half, Hagins made a driving layup to give the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the half at 25 points, and give the team a 52-27 advantage. Brockport closed out the first frame up 52-32.
The Green and Gold never gave up their double digit lead through the second half. They continued to turn up the pressure, as the team finished with a total of 17 steals in the game.
Danny Ashley lead unit with six steals, which is a career high for the young player. Following a deep three pointer and a layup by
Montgomery Stroman, Brockport's edge grew to 79-55 halfway through the second. A few minutes later at the 8:02 mark in the second half,
Antonio Alvarez hit back-to-back triples to further expand the scoring margin. As the end of regulation was approaching Brockport did not let up and they walked away with a comfortable win.
Justin Summers had himself another impressive performance with 21 points and seven blocks, while also grabbing five rebounds. Hagins had 18 points for himself and five steals to go with four rebounds and four assists. The bench outscored the opposition 46-15, led by 14 points by Alverez, nine by Kennedy-Gay and eight by Stroman.
Brockport faces off in the championship game on Monday, Dec. 17 against Washington and Lee University at 2 p.m.
