DAYTONA, FL.—The College at Brockport men's basketball team faced off against Washington and Lee University in the Mauro Panaggio Invitational championship game. They were unable to come away with the win, losing by a score of 75-66. The loss drops the Green and Gold to a 6-4 overall record, while the Generals move to 7-3.
The Golden Eagles were impressive to start the game, grabbing the lead at the 17:57 mark with a layup by
Devante Hagins.
Josh Nelson nailed a three-pointer that was followed by a
Justin Summers bucket that brought the score to 11-5 in favor of Brockport. The advantage rose to as many as nine nights only multiple occasions thanks to a corner three by Hagins, and layups by
Montgomery Stroman and Summers. Unfortunately, the lead was temporary as the Generals surged ahead at the 8:02 mark. The Green and Gold witnessed a deficit of 13 points at the 3:33 mark, but
Antonio Alvarez caught fire with back-to-back makes from behind the arc and a layup. As the horn sounded, the score sat at 38-33 in favor of the opposition.
The two teams continued to battle throughout the second half, until a 9-1 Brockport run tied the score up with 13:39 left to play. Summers initiated the charge with six straight points thanks to two made free throws and two layups.
Jahidi Wallace scored his first point of the season at the charity stripe, which cut the deficit to one. A minute later, Summers knocked down a jump shot to even up the score at 44-44. The Generals once again surged ahead and Brockport was unable to mount another comeback, eventually falling 75-66.
Summers earned All-Tournament honors after scoring 23 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking two shots in 36 minutes of action.
Chris Atkinson helped run the offense recording six assists along with 13 points and a trio of steals. Hagins appeared in multiple areas in the stat sheet, contributing ten points, while collecting eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
Brockport will have a few weeks without games due to winter break, but will head on the road on Friday, Jan. 4, where they will kick off the new year with a non-conference battle against Alfred University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
