BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport picked up their second SUNYAC win of the season Friday night against Plattsburgh 64-56. The team improves to 4-5 on the season and 2-1 in conference play, while the Cardinals fall to 3-5 in 2018 and 0-3 in league action.
After a few games on the road, bringing their efforts back home was exactly what the Golden Eagles needed to get back on track. The first quarter was slow offensively for both teams, however the Green and Gold quickly kicked it into gear, dominating the second quarter from start to finish. The Golden Eagles went on a 12-point run to start the second quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 20-6, securing them the lead before the half. An 8-2 run for the Green and Gold to close the second helped build their lead, as
Allison Chiera got things started with back-to-back scores, and
Bailey Pratt put the finishing touches on the half with a triple to take a 30-20 lead into the break.
Once the Golden Eagles were able to break open the gap, there was no turning back. In the third quarter, the Golden Eagles fought to hold off a charging Cardinal squad, and built on their lead, seeing it swell to 16 by the end of the frame.
Emily Nestler converted an old-fashioned three-point play to get things rolling, and following Plattsburgh free throws, Nestler, Chiera and
Julianna Taylor all hit jumpers to post a 51-35 lead heading into the fourth.
The Green and Gold led the Cardinals through the entire second half, securing the win from the free-throw line down the stretch, posting the 64-56 conference victory.
Nestler and Chiera were the perfect duo for the Golden Eagles offensively, each adding 15 points on the night. Nestler had a strong night on all accounts, picking up 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks on top of her 15 points.
Chelsea Henry's quick feet kept the pace consistent for the Green and Gold, allowing her to net nine points while locking in two rebounds and three assists. Taylor came up big on the boards, grabbing 11 rebounds on the night, allowing the Golden Eagles to pick up many of their 12 second chance points.
The team is back in action again tomorrow, Dec. 7 for another conference matchup against SUNY Potsdam at 2 p.m.
