KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The College at Brockport field hockey team started their season on a high note Friday afternoon, notching their first win of the season over Keuka College 4-2.
Despite being slightly less experienced than their opponents, stacking more than half their roster with freshman, Brockport didn't let inexperience get in their way but instead turned what many would consider a disadvantage into a success.
"Our freshman played fantastic and stepped up to the challenge today," said head coach
Krista Archambeau. "We had multiple start and play strong for the full game."
The Golden Eagles took command of the offense from the start, allowing for sophomore
Katie Ziemba to collect her first goal of the season and put the first point on the board. However, the Wolves were quick to respond with two goals before the end of the half, putting the Golden Eagles at a one goal deficit with another half to play.
Both teams remained stagnant well into the second half until freshman
Alyssa Fuccillo took control of the circle, tying the game 2-2 with her first collegiate goal. Fuccillo's goal would bring life back to the Golden Eagle offense in the second half as two more goals were to follow.
After a scoreless 20 minutes, Ziemba commanded the offense once again, collecting her second goal of the day, leaving Brockport up one with a little over three minutes left in regulation. Junior
Molly Scarpello would follow suit no more than a minute later, adding the Golden Eagles fourth goal of the game to help secure a win.
Ziemba and freshman
Katelynn Mello both made their presence clear in today's matchup, combining for two goals and three assists.
Coach Archambeau was very excited about the collective effort she saw on the field and the team's ability to stick to what they've been working on in preseason and persist.
"I am so proud of the team. They played hard for the full 70 minutes and finished when we needed them to," said Archambeau. "We stayed together as a unit and had a great second half to come from behind and win."
The Green and Gold are back in action Wednesday Sept. 5, where they will matchup against Nazareth College in their first home game of the season at 7 p.m.
