SCRANTON, PA. – The College at Brockport women's volleyball team wrapped up the Scranton Invitational with another split on day two. The day began with a 3-1 loss to the University of Scranton, but the team showed their resiliency with a 3-1 victory over Misericordia University. The Golden Eagles now hold a record of 2-2 on the young season.
Game One vs. The University of Scranton: L, 3-1 (13-25, 25-16, 17-25, 16-25)
The Green and Gold got off to a strong start in the first set, grabbing the lead 4-1 on three errors by the opposition and a kill by
Cassie Birth. Unfortunately, the team was unable to hold on and would drop the set. The Golden Eagles bounced back in the second set, grabbing the lead 3-2 on a Birth kill, an advantage that they never relinquished as they tied the match at one set apiece.
Laiken Fox and Birth led the team in kills with nine each as
Meaghan Mastro added five of her own.
Emily Orminski held the top mark for assists with 25 and
Christa Mickol finished with 12 digs. The team as a whole recorded 35 kills, 33 assists and 52 digs.
Game Two vs. Misericordia University: W, 3-1 (25-20, 25-27, 25-15, 25-20)
Brockport earned their second win of the season after battling with a well-rounded Cougars team. After clinching the first set, the Golden Eagles dropped set two after a back-and-forth affair. The unit continued to battle and took control with a set three victory. The young Green and Gold team wrapped up their weekend by taking the final frame 25-20.
Lindsey Luce led the team with 10 kills, followed by Fox and Birth who both had nine of their own. Orminski led the team with assists again with 27. Michol dug 21 balls in the second match of the day and Birth recorded 13 digs of her own. The squad racked up 42 kills, 28 assists and 67 digs.
The Golden Eagles host Roberts Wesleyan College for their home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.
