Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Brockport Drops Thriller To Red Hawks

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's volleyball team hosted Roberts Wesleyan College for their home opener and lost a five-set battle, 3-2. The record for the Golden Eagles sits at 2-3, while the Red Hawks jump to 1-4 on the year.

The Green and Gold fell behind 3-0 early in the first set, but didn't let that fluster them as they tied it up at 5-5 on a Red Hawks error, before a Cassie Birth service ace gave them a lead that they would not relinquish the remainder of the set. After a 6-6 tie, the Golden Eagles rallied off eight straight points to open up the game. Meaghan Mastro led the way during the run, recording three service aces. The team allowed only seven more points to the opposition the rest of the set, taking the first frame 25-13.

The second set saw Brockport take a quick 5-0 lead thanks to a service ace by Shelby Budnick and kills by Laiken Fox and Lindsey Luce. Roberts Wesleyan proved resilient and battled back to force a 6-6 tie. Both units traded leads until the Green and Gold used a 5-0 run to open up the game. Fox and Luce combined to rack up four kills before an Emily Orminski service ace brought the lead to 16-10. The set never got closer as the Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead.

After dropping the third set 25-18, Brockport went back and forth with the opponent in the fourth. Both teams exchanged leads until the deficit grew to 21-15. Kills by Fox and Luce stopped the run and allowed the team to go on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 23 a piece. Neither team was giving in, but the Golden Eagles dropped the fourth set 30-28. The final set saw a continuation of the prior frame, as both teams went back and forth with the lead, until the Red Hawks broke away and scored three straight points to win the final set 15-13 and the match 3-2.

Fox led the team with 21 kills with Birth close behind with 20. Orminski led the team once again in assists with 56 and Christa Michol led the way defensively with 24 digs, followed by 17 by Budnick. As a team, the Green and gold racked up 65 assists, 85 digs and 69 kills.

Brockport remains at home for the weekend as they host the Golden Eagle Invitational. They kick the tournament off with a 4 p.m. matchup against Thiel College on Friday Sept. 7.
