UTICA, N.Y. – The College at Brockport field hockey team was looking to capitalize and bring their season to an even .500 as they battled against Utica College Wednesday night. The Green and Gold fell just short, by a score of 4-2, and now hold a record of 2-4 on the season.
Right off the bat the Pioneer's dictated the speed of the game, netting a goal in the first minute of the game. Brockport's defense was heavily tested, facing 26 total shots, 14 of them on goal. Defensive back
Kelsey Devine and goalie
Adriana DeDie were a powerhouse duo for the Golden Eagles, Devine collecting three of the team's defensive saves, followed by DeDie, recording seven saves on the evening.
The Golden Eagles momentum slowly started to pick up as they tried to turn their free opportunities into points. As communication began to flow more freely, the Brockport offense pushed back, forcing six back-to-back penalty corners. Despite consistently pushing themselves into the Pioneers offensive circle, the Golden Eagles just couldn't find a productive shot on goal, being outshot 17-2 before the end of the first half. The Pioneers would find their second goal of the game with a minute remaining.
Both teams returned from the half strong, however the Golden Eagles offense really kicked it into gear. With 24:50 to go in the second half, freshman
Katelynn Mello took off on the breakaway, marching up the field with forward
Alyssa Fuccillo, feeding her a beautiful cross net pass for Brockport's first goal of the night. The Golden Eagles pushed back slowly but surely, adding two shots on goal, and four more shots total. Sophomore
Katie Ziemba would close the gap to 3-2 for Brockport, tapping in a shot fired into the circle by
Meaghan Lurz for goal number two. The Pioneers would answer back quickly, collecting their fourth goal of the game with five minutes to play, and ultimately securing them the win.
Brockport heads into their first conference game of the season against SUNY Oswego Saturday at 1 p.m. The last time these two teams met, the Golden Eagles lost a close 1-0 match to the Lakers.
