CORTLAND, N.Y.—The College at Brockport women's volleyball team began State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) competition with a weekend of pool play at SUNY Cortland. The Golden Eagles kicked off with a 3-0 victory over Plattsburgh State moving to a 7-7 overall record and a SUNYAC mark of 1-0. The Cardinals fall to 3-10 and 0-1 in conference competition.
In the first set, Brockport fell behind 2-0 but quickly rallied off four straight points to reclaim the lead. The Golden Eagles regularly took advantage of opponent errors, using build their momentum and set up their hitters
Lauren Hess,
Laiken Fox,
Meaghan Mastro and
Lindsey Luce to record points. The team maintained control throughout the first set, in route to a 25-16 win.
The Green and Gold once again fell behind to start the second set by a score of 3-0. However, they never lost confidence and used kills by
Maddy Taylor and Luce to tie the set at 4-4. After back-and-forth lead changes and ties, Brockport managed to claim a lead after back-to-back kills by Hess brought the score to 10-9. A service ace by
Abbey Manning and kills by Hess and Mastro continued the momentum and grew the advantage to 14-9, forcing a Cardinals timeout. The lead was not comfortable however, as Plattsburgh tied the set up at 22 a piece. The Golden Eagles stopped the run, and used three straight points to take the set, 25-22.
In the final frame of the match, Brockport got off to a fast start, grabbing a 3-0 advantage off the bat. The Cardinals responded, tying the set at 6-6, but the Green and Gold had an answer themselves. They rallied off four straight points, including three straight service aces by
Christa Mickol. The Golden Eagles continued to take a grasp on the match, using a run of six straight points to bring their lead to 17-9. While Plattsburgh mounted a bit of a comeback, the Green and Gold held them back, and claimed the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
Hess led the way with 11 kills, with Fox contributing eight and Mastro adding six.
Emily Orminski dished out dimes all day, recording 32 assists. Manning and Taylor did well defensively, with each digging 13 balls a piece. As a team, the Golden Eagles racked up 35 kills, 10 service aces and eight total blocks.
Brockport continues the SUNYAC pool play on Saturday, Sept. 22 when they battle SUNY Fredonia at 12 p.m. and SUNY New Paltz at 2:30 p.m.
