Brockport Splits On Second Day Of Pool Play

CORTLAND, N.Y.— The College at Brockport women's volleyball team competed in the second day of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) pool play. The Golden Eagles split the day with a 3-2 win against Fredonia State and a 3-0 loss against SUNY New Paltz. With both results, Brockport now holds a record of 8-8 and 2-1 in the SUNYAC.

Game One vs. Fredonia State: W, 3-2 (23-25, 25-13, 25-18, 16-25, 18-16)

After dropping the first set, the Green and Gold captured the second set in impressive fashion. Despite falling behind 5-4, the unit put together four straight points to reclaim the advantage thanks to a pair of errors by the blue devils, a kill by Laiken Fox and Kristen Lansburg service ace. The Golden Eagles continued to expand the lead thanks to a 3-0 run and then 5-0 run that pushed the score to 18-8. After a back-and-forth with New Paltz, Brockport finished the set by scoring four straight points.

The third set saw a battle that included multiple point exchanges until Fredonia rocked off four points and took an 11-10 lead. The Green and Gold responded with a run of their own that included kills by Meaghan Mastro, Emily Orminski and a service ace by Maddy Taylor that saw the score shift to 14-12. A few errors by the opposition and kills by Mastro and Fox helped further the lead to 20-15. The unit went on to win the third frame 25-18.

Despite dropping the fourth set, the Green and Gold looked to battle for a fifth set win. The start was tough as they fell behind 9-2, but the team unleashed a 6-0 run that cut the deficit to 9-8. The blue devils continued to push their lead, however, as they stretched it to 13-9, but Brockport once again showed their ability to come back. They marched towards a 15-14 advantage after a 6-1 run. In the end, the Green and Gold took the set 18-16 and won the match 3-2.

Fox led the way with 22 kills, Luce with 17 and Mastro with 12. Orminski recorded 58 assists and Taylor had 27 digs, with Christa Mickol adding 19 of her own. As a team, the unit finished with 67 kills, eight blocks, 66 assists and 95 digs.

Game Two vs. SUNY New Paltz: L, 3-0 (26-28, 14-25, 21-25)

The first set saw an intense battle between the two teams. Brockport was constantly making comebacks including a 3-0 run that got them back into the set and bringing the score to 6-6. After a back-and-forth for a few points, the Hawks grabbed a 15-10 advantage and later a 21-14 advantage, but the Golden Eagles were persistent. In an 8-0 run that included three kills by Mastro, a kill be Hess and multiple errors by the Hawks, Brockport held a 22-21 lead. From there both teams battled until the opposition used back to back kills to take the set.

Fox led the team again with 13 kills, with Mastro contributing eight. Orminski led the unit with 29 assists and Taylor was ahead in digs with 13. As a group, Brockport recorded 32 kills, 30 assists and 46 digs.
