BROCKPORT, N.Y.— The College at Brockport women's volleyball team opened up the Golden Eagle Invitational with a 3-1 victory over Frostburg State University and a 3-1 loss against Thiel College Other teams that are competing in the event include, SUNY Potsdam, Cazenovia College and Baldwin Wallace University.
Game One vs. Thiel College: L, 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 24-26, 24-26)
The Golden Eagles against Tomcats battle was a close one all game and it showed right off the bat. Neither team gained more than a two point advantage until Brockport came back and began to take control. After being down 13-11, a kill by
Laiken Fox stopped the opponent run before an error then tied the game at 13. A block by Fox and
Elena Grossman helped the team grab a lead that was then extended on a
Meaghan Mastro service ace. A few points later, a string of blocks by Grossman helped secure a five point lead that they would use to secure the first set.
The second set was a game of three-to-five point runs that each team used to either tie or grab the lead. The Green and Gold started by jumping to a 5-2 lead, but a Tomcat run tied the set at 6-6. From there the opposition pushed to a 12-8 advantage that the Golden Eagles found themselves fighting back from. When the tie finally came at 15-15, each unit took turns being ahead, but it was mostly short lived until the Tomcat's took the second set. Both the third and fourth set finished with a final score of 26-24 that Brockport was on the wrong side of.
Game Two vs. Frostburg State University: W, 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-18)
The first set of the second match, saw a Frostburg State team hang close with Brockport, as neither group could pull away for more than two points. Despite losing the first set, the Green and Gold held their composure and put together three consecutive sets of winning volleyball.0
In the beginning of the second you saw the same competitive atmosphere as the first set with neither team pulling away, but that changed when the score hit 11-11.
Lindsey Luce earned a kill that gave the unit a lead and then, with
Christa Mickol serving, Brockport rallied off five unanswered points to take a commanding 17-11 lead. After a Bobcat point, the Green and Gold recorded another three straight points and ended up tying the match 1-1 with a 25-21 second set victory.
In the third set, the Golden Eagles used two runs of five unanswered points to grab a 14-8 lead that they would not relinquish. Fox and Grossman led the way in the first run with both registering two kills and then a combination of
Lauren Hess and
Cassie Birth helped stifle Bobcat runs, while helping the team start their own. Brockport worked their way to three straight set wins to earn their first win of the Golden Eagle Invitational.
The Green and Gold are back in action Saturday, Sept. 8 when they battle Cazenovia College at 11 a.m. and Baldwin Wallace University at 3 p.m.
