PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – After an exciting win against Buffalo State to turn their streak around, The College at Brockport women's basketball team went head to head with Plattsburgh Friday night for their first of two conference games this weekend. Both teams remained evenly matched throughout the game, however the Cardinals came out on top 54-50. Brockport moves to 4-5 in conference and 6-10 overall.
The last time these two teams met, the Golden Eagles picked up an eight-point win against the Cardinals, with
Emily Nestler and
Allison Chiera leading the pack.
Neither team was overly successful offensively in the first, however turnovers proved to be an issue for Brockport as they allowed the Cardinals to pick up six points off those opportunities, ultimately allowing them to secure the lead. Still trying to find their groove, the Green and Gold saw points from a number of players including
Zaria McCullough,
Morgan Elmer,
Kylee Rosbrook, and Nestler who each put two on the board with
Julianna Taylor leading closely with three.
Nestler kick started the offense to open up the second, demanding her space in the paint to move the Golden Eagles within two. Chiera saw her opportunity to tie up the game shortly after, powering through the Cardinal defense to sink a floater. The Golden Eagles continued to find success in the lane, picking up 18 points in the paint.
Chelsea Henry provided some power from the outside, netting a shot from the corner to give the Green and Gold the go ahead. The freshman's quick feet would continue to be an asset for Brockport as a timely steal before the buzzer allowed the Golden Eagles to secure a two-point lead before the half, 28-26.
The Green and Gold entered the third shooting 50% through two, looking to open up the lead in the second half. With the Cardinals adding extra pressure defensively, the Golden Eagles struggled to find effective movement in their zone. Nestler and Rosbrook each added points of their own however Henry turned the tides in the final minute of the period, once again bringing the Golden Eagles within two before the buzzer.
The two continued a back and forth fight for the lead through much of the final quarter. With a time running out and the Golden Eagles down four, Nestler picked up a much-needed basket to move within two. In the final seconds Elmer managed to sink one from the perimeter to give the team their final push. Despite a strong effort in the final moments to regain the lead, the Golden Eagles weren't able to grab the win. Nestler ran away with the leaderboard for the Green and Gold shooting 8-15 for 20 points, eight rebounds and an assist. Henry was key off the boards for Brockport, picking up nine rebounds and two steals in addition to her eight points.
The Golden Eagles are back in action tomorrow as they take on their second conference opponent of the weekend Potsdam at 2 p.m.
