BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport men's basketball team got back to winning on Tuesday, defeating SUNY Fredonia, 107-50. Every single Golden Eagle that stepped onto the court contributed points and all but one grabbed a rebound as well. The win moves Brockport to an 11-7 overall record on the year and a 7-4 mark in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The Blue Devils drop to 2-17 on the year and 1-11 in conference competition.
The Green and Gold started off fast with buckets coming from
Danny Ashley,
Josh Nelson,
Antonio Alvarez,
Justin Summers and
Devante Hagins. The team shut out the Blue Devils in the opening three minutes as they marched to an 11-0 lead. After an oppositional bucket, Brockport poured it on with another 11-0 run, this time contributed by
Brandon Kennedy-Gay and
Jahidi Wallace, that brought the score to 22-2 with 13:35 on the clock. The Golden Eagle defense kept Fredonia off-balance and forced a multitude of turnovers. Those led to a 16-3 run that gave the team a 38-5 advantage. At halftime, Brockport was up 55-22.
To start the second half, both teams traded buckets to keep the difference at 33 points but Brockport's relentless defense and smart shot taking helped them creep to a 40 point lead after a pair of free-throws by Hagins. Six minutes later,
Xavier Merriweather made two more free-throws and extended the lead to an impressive 50 points, 87-37.
Nathan Brawdy secured the century mark with 2:41 to play in the game, sinking a three-pointer to make the score 100-45. Once
Michael Pavinelli killed the final secons of the game, the final on the scoreboard was 107-50.
Summers was impressive with 17 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks. Ashley led the offense with ten assists and was consistent on defense collecting three steals.
Montgomery Stroman was a force off the bench, contributing 14 points and four steals. As a team, Brockport forced 29 turnovers thanks to 17 steals and nine blocks. The bench outscored that of Fredonia 58-20.
The Golden Eagles will remain at home this weekend as they kick off a pair of SUNYAC games on Friday, Feb. 1 as SUNY New Paltz comes to town. The matchup is set to start at 7:30 p.m. following the women's game.
