MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The College at Brockport field hockey team heads on the road Friday for a conference matchup with Morrisville State at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles enter the contest with a leg up on the competition, posting a 7-5 record overall compared to the Mustangs 1-10 record.
Heavy Offense Against YellowJackets: Tuesday night was a heavy offensive night at the Dr. Linda Arena and Class of 69' Field Hockey Venue as the Golden Eagles and the University of Rochester combined for eight goals of total offense.
Bailey Lazore,
Katelynn Mello and
Renee Lauer were the offensive backbone that the Golden Eagles needed to keep competitive with the YellowJackets, each recording a goal on the night. Lauer and
Emily Hall each provided an assist as well. Despite not recording a lot of opportunities on goal, the Green and Gold were effective in their execution when in the circle, notching three goals on only five total shots on goal.
Last Time They Met: The Mustangs were the Golden Eagles only conference win in the 2018 season, with a 4-2 finish in the Green and Gold's favor.
Katie Ziemba was dominant offensively, collecting two of the teams four goals, one of which was unassisted, and an assist on one of the others. The junior consistently pressured the Mustangs defense, recording five total shots on goal on the day. Hall and Mello each added a goal for the Golden Eagles as well, allowing the team to finish the day with 16 total shots on goal and eight penalty corner opportunities.
Tough Start For the Mustangs: The Mustangs enter Friday's contest with an overall record of 1-10 and 0-3 in conference play. The team is averaging 1.65 goals per game and an overall .626 shot on goal percentage. Sophomore Grace Hanehan has been the top performer for the Mustangs so far this season, recording six goals and eight assists through 11 games. Hanehan currently leads the league in points with 20 total. Despite their tough win loss differential, goalie Morgan Dueber has posted solid numbers, notching 160 saves for a total .724 save percentage.
Record Book Additions: Ziemba's ability to provide opportunities in the offensive circle thus far this season has grabbed her a spot amongst some of Brockport's best, joining the list of single season record holders with her six total assists. Fellow junior
Meaghan Lurz is close to joining her friend, only two goals away from adding her name to the list of leaders in goals in a single season.
SUNYAC Standings: Even though the Golden Eagles have had a tough start to conference play, their overall numbers show promise going forward. The team currently ranks second overall in the SUNYAC in goals (36) and assists (28). Individually, Ziemba is tied for second overall in assists (6) and Lurz is tied for fourth overall in goals (6). Both athletes find themselves at the top of the list in points as well, notching 18 and 15 respectively. The Golden Eagles defense still remains unmatched, with
Bella Addesa and
Emma Acevedo holding the second and third spot in defensive saves, accounting for seven total.
The Golden Eagles are back in action on Wednesday where they will travel to neighboring St. John Fisher College for a 7 p.m. contest.
