BROCKPORT, N.Y. – With only two games left in the regular season, The College at Brockport field hockey team moves one step closer to clinching a spot in the post season for the first time since 2010.
Conference Breakdown: The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) currently has seven teams who compete throughout the season and only the top four teams each season get a run at the championship. The Golden Eagles currently rank fourth overall in the conference with an even 2-2 record, with New Paltz and Oneonta sitting on either side of them. This weekend is going to be crucial in determining who secures the second, third and fourth seed as Cortland and New Paltz both hold a 3-1 record and the Golden Eagles and Oneonta both hold a 2-2 record.
Battle of the Green and Gold: Knowing that a win would get them one step closer to the post season, the Golden Eagles put in a strong effort against the Lakers on Saturday, grabbing a shutout win, 2-0.
Renee Lauer and
Meaghan Lurz led the offense with some help from
Emily Hall and
Katie Ziemba. Lurz's goal put her among some of Brockport's finest, as she became one of 15 players all-time to score nine or more goals in a single season.
Post Season Push: The Golden Eagles head on the road to Oneonta this weekend for their second to last matchup of the regular season. The Green and Gold get Oneonta at a weak point, coming off a 6-2 loss to the conference leader, Geneseo. Oneonta will face Ithaca College before welcoming the Green and Gold to All-College Field. The last time these two met, the Red Dragons offense was extremely dominant, recording nine goals against the Golden Eagles to hold on to a perfect 5-0 record. The Golden Eagles lone goal of the game came from
Katelynn Mello, for her fifth of the season. The Red Dragons went on to lose a tough 3-2 battle to Cortland in the SUNYAC Semifinals.
What To Expect: The Red Dragons are currently averaging 2.43 goals per game and a .679 shot on goal percentage. Senior Alise Anson is the driving force of the Red Dragons offense with seven goals and an assist. Anson is followed closely by junior Grace Billow who has recorded five goals and two assists. The Golden Eagles lead the Red Dragons in five different conference stat categories including goals, goals per game, assists, goals against average, defensive saves and save percentage.
Collective Offense: The Golden Eagles have six different athletes recording 10+ points on the season including Lurz, Ziemba, Lauer, Mello, Lazore, and
Alyssa Fuccillo. Each athlete has been an integral part of the Green and Gold's offensive movement this season, whether that means finding the back of the goal, or providing the opportunities for scoring. In this season alone, the Golden Eagles have amassed more points as a team than any other team in the last decade. The last group to come even close to the Golden Eagles 117 points was the 2011 team with 111.
