Field Hockey to Close Out 2019 Season At Geneseo

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -  The College at Brockport field hockey team is set to close out the 2019 season on Wednesday against the conference leader, SUNY Geneseo. The Green and Gold have amassed a 9-7 overall record heading into the final matchup, their best recorded season since 2011.

Record Book Season: Not only have the Golden Eagles recorded their strongest season in almost a decade, the team came one game short of being only the second team in program history to make the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNAYC) tournament. Brockport finished fifth overall in the league, just behind SUNY Oneonta. The team ranked third overall in goals (43) goals per game (2.9), defensive saves (12) and shots per game (16.5) and second in assists (31) and shot percentage (.173).

The Golden Eagles found success individually as well with two players finding themselves members of the Brockport record book in addition to atop the SUNYAC leaderboard. Heading into the final game, forward Meaghan Lurz third overall in game winners (4), seventh in goals (9) and 10th in points. (20). Fellow junior Katie Ziemba joins her on that list, notching third overall in assists (7) and seventh overall in points (21). Both athletes found themselves amongst Brockport's best as well, Lurz joining the list of single season goal leaders and Ziemba amongst the single season assist leaders.

Goal Savvy Geneseo: The Knights came in hot in the 2018 season, shutting out the Golden Eagles 5-0 about halfway through the year. The team's offense was consistent in their efforts, putting up 44 total shots and 18 on goal. The Knights head into the post season a perfect 5-0 in conference play and a strong 15-2 overall, currently on a 12-game win streak. They are currently averaging 4.1 goals per game and only 1.18 goals against. In the month of October alone, the Knights have recorded 29 goals and 23 assists in seven games.

The Knights have three offenders who have recorded 11 goals on the season, including Haley Clark, Maggie Phipps and Erin Nolan. Clark also leads the team in assists as well with 11 and game winners (5).

Good Things Ahead: The Golden Eagles have a promising future ahead with no senior class in the 2019 season and welcoming back four core juniors for their senior season in 2020. Douglas, Hall, Ziemba, and Lurz have been strong leaders for the Green and Gold, each playing their part in leading the team to a successful season with even bigger things ahead.
