BROCKPORT, NY – The College at Brockport wrestling team posted five first place finishes and three second place finishes at the Brockport Open at the SERC on Saturday. As a team the Golden Eagles posted 24 pins in a time of 70:27 which ranked second at the open only to Scranton. The Golden Eagles led the open in tech falls with five (23:19) and Brockport also led the tournament with 527 total match points. The Brockport wrestlers posted a combined record of 68-24, good for a winning percentage of .739, which ranked first at the open.
Matt Caccamise, John Cantwell, Austin Sergeant, Zack Brown and Richard Knapp all took home first place finishes in their respective weight divisions. Wesley Woodworth, Joe Yanis and Devon Shader each posted a second place finish.
Caccamise won the open title in the 125 pound weight class. He posted two tech fall victories and one pin on his way to the first place matchup with Niagara County Community College's Jacob Bell. Caccamise, who earned an NCAA berth last season, earned the title after and 8-3 decision victory over Bell in the first place match. His two tech falls in a time of 9:27 was the most tech falls in the least time among all competitors. His 58 total match points were also tied for second at the open.
Cantwell placed first at 133 and registered 22 team points. He won four straight decisions in his way to the victory. Cantwell topped Kevin DePalma of the Buffalo Wrestling Club in the first place match by way of an 8-2 decision.
Austin Sergeant cruised to the first place match in the 141 pound division after three consecutive pins. He finished the tournament ranked sixth in the most pins/least time category (3 pins/6:30). Sergeant met up with Scranton's Anthony Clarizio in the first place match and topped the visitor via a 10-8 decision.
Zach Brown found his way to the 157 pound first place match following a tech fall, a pin and a decision in the semifinals over Anthony Miraglia. Brown ultimately took home top honors with a 7-3 decision victory over Scranton's Kyle Shaffer in the 157 first place match.
Richard Knapp dominated the 285 weight class as he pinned his way into the first place match with three consecutive fall's. He went on to decision Sam Weiger 8-3 to earn the top honors at 285.
Brockport returns to action on Saturday when the Golden Eagles travel to the Mount Union Invitational in Alliance, OH. The invite is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
