BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport football team as well as senior
Rashad Baker received recognition from the NCAA this week for their outstanding execution on the field in 2018. The team received the Division III football national statistical title for Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game and Baker received the statistical title for most Passes Defended Per Game.
"This group of guys made my job very easy," said head coach
Jason Mangone. "They constantly worked to step up their game each week and this award is just one of the many examples of their hard work and dedication to this program."
The Golden Eagle defense had a standout 2018 season and continues to be acknowledged for their ability to hold teams to minimal rushing yards all season, recording the lowest allowed average rushing yards against per game in Division III at 6.8 yards per game.
"This was a special group of kids, the leadership by the senior class was something that I have never seen before," said defensive coordinator
Mike Fox. "This was without a doubt the most talented and hardworking unit I have ever coached."
Baker was one of the key components to the Golden Eagle defense as his quick feet and smart placement allowed him to help kill the momentum of many opponents' offensive efforts. On top his 25 total pass breakups, the senior recorded 19 solo tackles and seven interceptions. His most notable defensive performance came in the Green and Gold final home game of the season against SUNY Cortland where he notched four interceptions, one of which sealed the deal for the Golden Eagles post season appearance. Not only did the game secure a spot in the 2018 NCAA Division III National Playoffs but it also secured Baker a spot in the Brockport record books, becoming the career leader in pass deflections with 40.
"The reason that we were so successful this season is because we were a part of something that was bigger than ourselves," said Baker. "We were a brotherhood and when you have a group of people all working towards the same goal, you can accomplish anything."
The Green and Gold are eager for the season ahead in hopes to continue the winning legacy that they have created over the last couple of years.
