Lurz Nets Overtime Goal To Secure 2-1 Win Over Utica

BROCKPORT, N.Y. –  The College at Brockport field hockey team picked up their fifth win of the season Wednesday night in exciting fashion, securing a 2-1 overtime win over Utica College.

Despite trailing the Pioneers for the first three quarters, the Golden Eagles remained evenly matched in offensive aggressiveness, notching 17 of their 21 total shots and 10 of their 11 penalty corners.

After three straight quarters of pressing the Pioneers offensive circle, Katie Ziemba opened up the fourth quarter with her fourth goal of the season a minute in, tying the game at one. Bailey Lazore assisted in putting the Green and Gold on the board, with a quick shot in from the top of the circle to give Ziemba the rebound opportunity.

The Pioneers then picked up momentum towards the end of the fourth in an effort to turn the tides however, the Golden Eagles defense was a brick wall in front of the net, sending the game to overtime. The dynamic between Bella Addesa, Emma Acevedo and goalie Cara Fox during regulation was key in leading the Green and Gold to victory as Acevedo and Addesa collectively recorded three defensive saves with Fox deflecting 12 shots on goal and eight total saves.

With six minutes left in overtime, Meaghan Lurz saw her opportunity to take control of the game and that she did. The junior took off on a breakaway down the right side of the field, putting herself in a one vs. one situation with the Pioneers goalie. On her first attempt, Lurz was shut down but her ability to read the ball off the goalie's deflection helped her net her fifth goal of the season to secure the win for the Golden Eagles.

The Green and Gold have an off weekend ahead and are scheduled to pick things back up on the road Tuesday against Houghton College at 7 p.m.
