BROCKPORT, N.Y. – After an exciting overtime win over Utica College last Wednesday, The College at Brockport field hockey team is excited to get back to work. The Golden Eagles are set to open up the week on the road against Houghton College Tuesday at 7 p.m. and will close things out on home turf Friday at 4 p.m. against SUNY Cortland.
Lurz Nabs Winning Goal In Overtime: The Golden Eagles had a light week last week with a single game against Utica College on Wednesday night where the team grabbed an exciting 2-1 overtime win courtesy of junior
Meaghan Lurz. Both teams remained scoreless through the first half while putting immense pressure on the opposing defenses to maintain perfection. The combo of
Katie Ziemba and Lurz was exactly what the Golden Eagles needed offensively, with each forward netting a goal. Ziemba sent the Green and Gold into overtime with a quick rebound goal in the fourth quarter but Lurz was ultimately the one to seal the deal. The junior landed a breakaway four minutes into OT giving herself a perfect one vs. one situation with the Pioneers goalie and the rest is history.
Last Time They Met: The Golden Eagles struggled to find their groove against Houghton in the 2018 season, picking up a 2-1 loss about halfway through the season. The Highlanders came out swinging, outshooting the Green and Gold 23-2 while forcing seven more penalty corners. The Golden Eagles solo goal of the evening came from forward
Kayli Brown, her second goal of the season.
What To Expect: In a much better position than they were last year, the Golden Eagles look to pick up their sixth win of the season against Houghton before meeting their first conference opponent on Friday. The Highlanders currently hold a record of 3-5 overall and welcomes back two senior classmen including defense Sydney Jameson and goalie Sarah Olandt. Jameson currently leads the team in goals (6), assists (2) and points (14). Junior Caitlin Jennings has been essential to the offense as well, notching four goals and two assists thus far. Through eight games, Olandt has recorded 60 saves in 115 shots faced for a solid .750 save percentage.
SUNYAC Leaders: As a team, the Golden Eagles are currently ranked second in the SUNYAC overall while leading the stats in goals and assists. Individually the Green and Gold are making a name for themselves as well, with Ziemba leading the league in assists (5) and points (15). On the defensive end,
Emma Acevedo is shining in front of the goal in her freshman season, leading the SUNYAC in defensive saves with three.
