BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport field hockey team lost an overtime heartbreaker to SUNY Cortland Friday night 2-1, picking up their first conference loss of the season. The Golden Eagles still sit in a comfortable spot heading into next week with a 6-3 overall record.
The Golden Eagles came ready to play against the former SUNYAC Championship runners up as both teams remained scoreless through the first quarter. Despite the Red Dragons picking up the first goal of the afternoon to start the second, goalie
Cara Fox held her own in the net against a dominating offensive effort, collecting five of the teams eight saves on the afternoon.
Bella Addesa and
Olivia Douglas assisted Fox in her efforts, each recording a defensive save to help keep the Golden Eagles in the game.
Junior
Meaghan Lurz wasn't willing to go out without a fight, providing the Green and Gold with their only score of the night to send the team to overtime.
Emily Hall added the assist, allowing Lurz to pick up her seventh goal of the season. Even though the Golden Eagles struggled to find the back of the net, it wasn't for lack of trying. The team recorded 12 total shots while forcing the Red Dragons defense to post eight saves. In addition to Lurz's goal, the Green and Gold saw strong offensive opportunities from
Bailey Lazore,
Renee Lauer,
Emma Acevedo,
Katelynn Mello,
Emily Hall and
Katie Ziemba, each of whom recorded at least one shot on goal.
The Golden Eagles pick things back up on home turf next week against Elmira College Wednesday at 7 p.m.
