Wallace's Buzzer Beater Forces OT, Brockport Clinches #1 Seed for SUNYAC

Cortland, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team defeated Cortland on the road Friday night, 86-80, in overtime. With the win, Brockport extends its win streak to 14 games and clinches the #1 seed for the SUNYAC Tournament.

Jahidi Wallace was the hero in this one, hitting a clutch shot at the end of regulation. Trailing by three with time running out, Danny Ashley came up with a rebound and kicked it out to Wallace who tied the game up as time expired. Brockport went on to outscore Cortland 11-5 in the overtime period.

Wallace led the way with 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field. Tyler Collins finished with 19 points and five assists in the win, while Antonio Alvarez scored 11 points and had three steals.

Monte Stroman went 6-for-11 from the floor to score 13 points off the bench and snagged a career-high eight rebounds. Danny Ashley did it all to tally seven points, six assists, five rebounds, and a steal.

Brockport took an early lead in the first half, going up 15-7. A Cortland run would swing the scoreboard, giving the Red Dragons a three-point edge halfway through the first. The Green and Gold would close the period strong to secure a 33-29 lead at the mid-game break.

Cortland grabbed the lead yet again about two minutes into the second half, 39-36. The game would remain tight the whole way, with lead changes throughout the half. Brockport trailed 71-66 with just two minutes remaining in regulation. Key defensive stops kept it a one possession game, and then it was the last second shot by Jahidi Wallace that tied the score up at 75-75.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Antonio Alvarez got things started for Brockport in overtime. Cortland was forced to foul down the stretch, where Tyler Collins and Danny Ashley both made clutch free throws to put the game away.

The Golden Eagles are now 21-3 overall and 16-1 in SUNYAC play. With the top seed in the conference secured they have clinched a first-round bye and will be hosting the SUNYAC Championships.

Brockport is back in action Saturday for the final regular season game of the year, as it is on the road to face Oswego. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 pm.
