Brockport, NY – It is Homecoming Weekend on the campus of SUNY Brockport, as the men's soccer team will host back-to-back SUNYAC matchups. Brockport will take on Fredonia on Friday at 3 pm before facing Buffalo State at 6 pm on Saturday.
Homecoming Weekend: The campus community will celebrate homecoming and family weekend Thursday-Saturday with a variety of events on campus to welcome back alumni, families, and friends of Brockport. Last Time Out: The Golden Eagles got a much needed win at home last time outing, defeating Potsdam 2-1.
Hunter Kassel and
Zach Langelotti both scored in the match, with Langelotti scoring the game-winner in the 80
th minute.
Matthew Stefaniw was credited with two assists, while
Seamus Parker also had an assist. Goalkeeper
Andrew Taylor came up clutch with nine saves in net for the team. The win put the Green and Gold at 6-6-1 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
Still Fighting: At 2-5 against SUNYAC opponents, Brockport is still in contention for a spot in the conference tournament. The team has six points in the standings and has the potential to finish the regular season with 12 points with two wins this weekend. Depending on other results around the conference, this could be enough for Brockport to jump up and snag the sixth seed in the SUNYAC Tournament.
Protecting the Nest: The Golden Eagles will close out the regular season with back-to-back home games. They have found success on the home turf, owning a 4-2-1 record playing at home. With a chance at a postseason berth still on the table, Brockport will need to capitalize on its home field advantage against Fredonia and Buffalo State.
Scoring Stefaniw: Senior forward
Matthew Stefaniw is the leading scorer for the Green and Gold this year with 10 goals on the season. He is currently just outside the top 50 in the nation in goals and is tied for second in the SUNYAC. Stefaniw has three multiple-goal contests this season, including a hat trick against Elmira earlier in the year. He is two goals shy of tying his career-high of 12 goals for the season, which he recorded in 2018.
In Net: Andrew Taylor has been the Golden Eagles' started goalkeeper for all 13 games this season. He has played nearly every minute of every game this year, facing a total of 132 shots between the pipes. Taylor has made 58 saves, putting him at the top of the SUNYAC goalkeepers statistical chart. He has also earned two solo shutouts and combined with fellow goalie
Ryan Gall for a clean sheet as well.
Looking at Fredonia: The Blue Devils are 6-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play going into Friday's matchup with Brockport. With just three points in the SUNYAC standings they have already been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention. After a recent 3-0 loss to Oneonta, Fredonia has just one win over its last eight contests. #20 Kevin Loftus leads the Blue Devils with four goals on the season. Brockport and Fredonia battled to a 1-1 draw in the last meeting back in 2019.
Looking at Buffalo State: The Buffalo State Bengals are currently 11-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the conference heading into the weekend. They are sitting in fourth place in the SUNYAC standings, needing just one win or draw to clinch a spot in the postseason. Buffalo State takes on Geneseo on Friday ahead of Saturday's battle with Brockport. The team lost its last match against Hobart, 3-2, in overtime. #10 Theo Pencic is the leading scorer in the SUNYAC with 15 goals on the year. Brockport has lost the last meeting with the Bengals, falling to them in overtime 2-1 in 2019's SUNYAC Quarterfinals.
SUNYACs Ahead: With this weekend marking the final set of games for the regular season, the postseason is coming up quickly. Depending on the weekend results around the conference, Brockport still has a chance to make the SUNYAC Tournament which is set to start on October 30
