Rochester, NY – The SUNY Brockport volleyball team went to five sets against St. John Fisher Tuesday night, taking the 3-2 loss on the road. Brockport is now 10-6 overall and 1-2 in SUNYAC play on the season.
Andrea Coyle,
Meaghan Mastro, and
Krysti McDonald all finished with a season-high in kills, recording 27, 20, and 14 respectively. Coyle also put up a season-high of 20 digs, while
Kerri McHale's 43 assists were also a season-high mark.
Mastro got up for four block assists and one solo block to lead all players in the match with five total blocks.
Ashley Allen contributed three block assists in this one and set the table for 23 assists.
Shelby Budnick was productive defensively with 26 digs, marking yet another individual season-high for the Green and Gold.
Madalyn Bowen added 14 digs of her own on the night. Budnick, Mastro, and
Jordan Thompson all came away with two service aces.
St. John Fisher and Brockport traded blows the entire match, going back and forth through all five sets. The first set saw the score tied on nine different occasions before the hosting Cardinals prevailed 25-23 to take the first match point. The Green and Gold bounced back with a solid win in the second set, 25-17, to even the score up at 1-1.
The third set was a thriller going past the generic 25 points per set mark. It was as close as it gets featuring a tied score on 21 different occasions, nine lead changes, and neither team was ever up by more than three points. Ultimately St. John Fisher prevailed with the 29-27 win to go up 2-1 in the match.
The Golden Eagles would jump out to a strong start for the fourth set, earning a 14-7 lead. Fisher would work to keep it close and eventually took a 19-18 lead later in the game. However, Brockport would close the set strong to earn the 25-23 win, sending the match to set number five.
Despite efforts from the Green and Gold to keep the fifth set close, St. John Fisher would lead from start to finish. The Cardinals took the final set, 15-12, narrowly escaping with a 3-2 win in the match improving to 12-3 overall and winning their ninth straight.
The Golden Eagles finally return home this weekend after nearly a month away from their home court. They host Potsdam at 6 pm on Friday and Plattsburgh at 1 pm on Saturday for back-to-back SUNYAC contests.
