Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport volleyball team is back home this weekend for the first time in nearly a month for two crucial SUNYAC matchups. Friday night the team takes on Potsdam at 6 pm before facing Plattsburgh at 1 pm on Saturday.
Last Outing: The Green and Gold lost a thrilling five set contest on the road against St. John Fisher earlier in the week. The hosting Cardinals got the win, 3-2, but had to battle for each point all the way through the finish line. Fisher took the first set 25-23, but Brockport won the second by a score of 25-17. The third set went further than 25 points, as Fisher earned the match point, 29-27. Brockport sent the game to a fifth set by winning the fourth, 25-23, but came up short 15-12 in the final set.
Home Sweet Home: With their last home match coming back on September 11
th, the Golden Eagles will be at home for four in a row. They play two this weekend against Potsdam and Plattsburgh, then will host two more next weekend against Buffalo State and Fredonia. Brockport looks to remain undefeated on its home floor, currently owning a 6-0 record while playing in the Jim & John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
Copying the 2019 Run: At 10-6 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC, the Golden Eagles have won just two of their last seven matches. On their run to winning the 2019 SUNYAC Title, they had a similar span at this point in the season. In 2019 the team had a stretch of winning just two out of seven right before an incredible push for the postseason. Brockport went on to win 15 of its last 16 matches, including two wins in the conference tournament to clinch the title.
Hard Hitters: Andrea Coyle and
Meaghan Mastro continue to play above the net, leading the squad in kills. Coyle is currently third in the SUNYAC with 187 kills, while Mastro is fifth in the conference with 165. Mastro's hitting percentage of .300 is second best in the SUNYAC. Coyle is second in the league with her average of 3.60 kills per set.
Megan Loomis is also top five in the conference with an average of 2.93 kills per set, while Masto is sixth averaging 2.84 kills per set.
Digging for Gold: Madalyn Bowen leads the squad with 223 digs and an average of 3.98 digs per set, ranking inside the top six for both categories in the SUNYAC.
Shelby Budnick (145),
Andrea Coyle (119), and
Kerri McHale (112) have all broken the century mark for digs this season, while
Ellen Paddock (94) is nearing 100 digs as well.
Setting Everyone Up: Ranking second in the conference, setter
Kerri McHale has a total of 369 assists so far this season. She leads the team in assists and carries a 6.71 assists per set mark that ranks third in the SUNYAC. Setter
Ashley Allen is right behind her with 193 assists and an averaging of 4.11 assists per set, sitting just outside of the top ten in the conference in both categories.
Looking at Potsdam: Potsdam enters Friday's match with a 5-7 record overall and a 1-4 mark against SUNYAC opponents. The squad lost 3-1 to Fredonia in its last match, giving it three losses out of the last four outings. The Green and Gold have won seven in a row against the Bears, including four 3-0 sweeps during the streak.
Looking at Plattsburgh: The Cardinals are 7-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play heading into the weekend. They will have lost five of the last six outings and have a chance to right the ship Friday against Geneseo before Saturday's date with Brockport. Brockport has defeated Plattsburgh six straight times going into this meeting, earning a 3-0 sweep in every match during the span.
