Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Kennedy-Gay Dishes Out 11 Assists in Blowout Win at Hobart

Geneva, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team blew out Hobart College, 77-53, to improve to 2-1 on the young season. Senior guard Brandon Kennedy-Gay had the best game of his collegiate career with 10 points and a career-high 11 assists on the night.

Brandon Kennedy-Gay notched his first career double-double to lead the Green and Gold to a win over Hobart on Tuesday night. His career-high 11 assists mark the first Brockport player to reach that mark since Hamed Shamseldin during the 2017-18 season. Brandon's 10 points is also a season-high so far this year.

Freshman Mekhi Beckett had his best outing as a Golden Eagle, leading all scorers with 19 points thanks to his 5-for-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Devante Hagins hit double figures for the second time this season posting 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Both David Grady III and Monte Johnson were close to a double-double in the contest. Grady tallied eight points and a game-high 13 boards, while Johnson recorded nine points and eight boards. The rebounding totals for both players mark a new season-high. Jahidi Wallace and Antonio Alvarez combined to score 17 points for the squad in this one.

The game started off as a back-and-forth affair, with the score tied at 9-9 seven minutes in. Three-point shooting created a spurt for the Hobart Statesmen as they created a 25-17 edge with 7:36 remaining before halftime. Brockport would chain together multiple stops to close the gap and a 3-pointer by Mekhi Beckett would tie the score up at 30-30 to end the half.

Brockport quickly surged forward to take a 38-30 lead in the first few minutes of the half, but Hobart would answer to keep the game within reach. Brandon Kennedy-Gay got the Golden Eagles rolling on offense with seven assists in the second half of play. His ball movement and the hot shooting of Mekhi Beckett opened the game up as the team extended its lead to double-digits. Brockport began to run away with this one down the stretch as it eventually closed the game with a 24-point victory. The squad outscored Hobart 47-23 in the second half.

The Statesmen were held to just 14 points in the paint and three fast break points in the contest, as they move to 2-2 on the season. Jackson Meshanic led the team as he posted a 15 point-12 rebound, double-double in the loss. Hobart has now lost two in a row and looks to right the ship against NYU this weekend.

The Golden Eagles are on the road for their next outing, as they head down to Brooklyn, NY. They take on Brooklyn College for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, November 23rd for a 5 pm tip-off.
