Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team pulled out a 75-65 win over Fredonia at home for the start of conference play. Brockport has now won 19 consecutive games at home and is on a four-game win streak this season, improving to 4-1 overall.
The Golden Eagles had four players score in double figures, led by
Jahidi Wallace's game-high 17 points.
Antonio Alvarez hit three shots from long range on his way to a season-high 16 points.
Brandon Kennedy-Gay and
Joseph Pena also hit new season-highs, finishing with 13 and 10 points respectively.
Pena neared a double-double, adding eight boards along with his double-digit scoring night. Despite fouling out late in the contest,
Devante Hagins had five blocks and five steals defensively. Brockport had 14 steals as a whole and held Fredonia to just 35.5% shooting from the floor.
Trailing 14-7 early on,
Antonio Alvarez got hot in the first half to spark a nice run for the Green and Gold. Alvarez poured in 11 points in a four-minute span to give the squad a 19-18 lead halfway through the opening half. Both teams battled for the lead before halftime, with Brockport ultimately earning a 36-34 edge going into the break.
There was a total of 10 lead changes and the score was tied on seven different occasions in this contest.
The Golden Eagle defense proved to make the difference early on in the half, as they allowed just five points in the first five minutes. They worked to extend the slim lead, eventually earning an 11-point lead with seven minutes to go in regulation. Combined the two conference foes shot a total of 43 free throws in the second half. Brockport converted just well enough at the charity stripe to hold off the Blue Devils down the stretch to earn the 75-65 victory.
Fredonia was led by Dydy Bryan's 16 points, as three other players also scored at least 10 points. The team shot just 5-for-20 from long range and committed 22 turnovers in the loss. The Blue Devils have still yet to win a game this season, as they are now 0-7 overall and 0-1 in the SUNYAC.
The Golden Eagles continue conference play this weekend as they prepare for a pair of SUNYAC opponents. They travel to face Cortland at 7:30 pm on Friday before taking on Oswego at 4 pm at home on Saturday.
