Cortland, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team marched past Cortland for an 87-60 win on the road Friday night, improving to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC. The Golden Eagles outscored Cortland, 53-26, in the second half to win their fifth game in a row.
Jahidi Wallace and
Mekhi Beckett both scored new season-highs in the win, matching each other with 23 points. Both contributed to the explosive second half scoring for the team, as Wallace and Beckett poured in a combined 31 points in just the second half.
Wallace also dished out a career-high of six assists in the road victory.
David Grady III was the third player to hit double-digits in the scoring column in this one, finishing with 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field.
Brockport owned the stat sheet as a team, gaining the advantage all over the box score. The squad won the turnover battle, having 12 less giveaways than Cortland. The Green and Gold had 36 points in the paint and 30 points off turnovers compared to just 14 and 15 respectively from Cortland. The team's bench also outscored the Red Dragons reserves, 40-22, in the contest.
The Red Dragons started off hot from beyond the 3-point arc, helping them take an early 11-4 lead. Brockport kept the game close throughout the half and eventually tied the score up at 18-18 with less than 10 minutes on the clock. Cortland surged out to another lead, but the Golden Eagles closed the half strong to tie it up once again. The teams were deadlocked at 34-34 heading into the break.
The score was tied once again at 42-42 at around the 17-minute mark in the second half, but soon the Golden Eagles would take off. They worked to take a 10-point lead with 11:40 left in the game and the lead would steadily grow from there.
Jahidi Wallace and
Mekhi Beckett caught fire and pushed Brockport ahead to take an 82-57 lead with two minutes remaining. In the second half, Wallace scored 16 and Beckett had 15 to propel the Green and Gold to a decisive 27-point victory on the road.
The Red Dragons are now 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference to start the season, with a chance to bounce back Saturday on the road against Fredonia. The team had two double-digit scorers in the contest, as Austin Grunder had 13 points and Danny Linehan had 10 of his own.
The Golden Eagles return home on Saturday for another SUNYAC matchup against Oswego, in a rematch of the 2019-20 SUNYAC Semifinals. The game is set to tip-off at 4 pm back in The Vlog where Brockport has won 19 straight games.
