Morrisville Tops Brockport in Empire 8 Play

The SUNY Brockport football team lost to host Morrisville State 13-7 in Empire 8 Conference action on Saturday afternoon.  Brockport's Alaan Montgomery returned an interception 79 yards for a score with just 22 seconds left in the first half of play to give the Golden Eagles a 7-6 lead at the half. 

Brockport's record fell to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in Empire 8 play this season. The Golden Eagles will return home for their regular season finale on Saturday when they host Alfred University in Empire 8 Conference action on Senior Day at Bob Boozer Field. The contest is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. Morrisville's record moved to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in league play. 

The Brockport defense held the Mustangs to just nine total first downs on the day and 211 yards overall.  Andrew Covais and Ben Damiani each led the way for the Golden Eagles with nine tackles.  Damiani also added a pass breakup, while Covais posted 1.5 tackles for a loss.  Ben Robinson chipped in with eight tackles, while Josh Greenwood and Ben Marshall each added six tackles. 

Morrisville took a 6-0 lead with 4:47 to go in the first half of play after Steven Frerichs connected with Toure Hall Jr. on a 56-yard touchdown pass down the sideline to cap a six play 67 yard scoring drive for the Mustangs. 

The Golden Eagles struck back before the half when Montgomery picked off Frerichs and returned it 79 yards to propel Brockport into the half with a 7-6 lead. 

Morrisville stalled the Brockport momentum early in the third quarter when Roland Bevans scooped up a Golden Eagle fumble and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown to put the home team on top 13-7 with 13:31 to go in the third. 

Morrisville's defense was able to hold Brockport off the board for the remainder of the contest to earn the senior day victory at home.  The Mustangs held the Golden Eagles to just 46 total yards rushing on the ground. 
 
Brockport freshman quarterback Jack Cheshire completed 14 passes for 140 yards, while junior running back Jala Coad carried the ball 21 times for 38 total yards.  Louis Usera led all Bport receivers with six catches for 52 yards, while James Altenburger added two catches for 38 yards.

Quarterback Steven Frerichs carried the ball 26 times for 54 yards and he also completed three passes for 69 yards and a touchdown in the victory. 

Morrisville's Ernesto Mitchell posted a game-high 11 stops, while Joe Miller-Labar added eight tackles and a sack.
