Strough Rewrites History as #13 Brockport Dominates in Home Opener

Brockport, NY – The No. 13 Brockport Women's Lacrosse team dominated Buffalo State, 18-5, in its home opener for the 2021 season. Natalie Strough broke the program record for assists in a single game, as she dished out nine helpers on the day. Brockport improves to 1-2 overall on the season and 1-1 in SUNYAC play.
 
Strough finished with 11 total points in the game, just one shy of tying the record, with her two goals and nine assists. Allison Jennings put up five points off of four goals and one assist.
 
Heather Conklin shook up the history books as well, moving up to second all-time in program history in career goals. Conklin scored three goals and had one assist on the day, giving her 173 total scores for her career. She now needs just 12 more goals to set the all-time program record.
 
Cassidy Burnash put up a career-best stat line of three goals in the blowout win over the Bengals. Freshman Logan Hibbard found the back of the net for the first time in her career, scoring two goals for the Green and Gold. Classmate Alexandria VanDerKar also netted the first two scores of her collegiate career in the win.
 
The Golden Eagles struck first, thanks to Conklin's score less than three minutes into the match. Buffalo State kept the score close at 3-2, until Brockport scored five straight to take a commanding 8-2 advantage with less than six to play before halftime. Both sides found the net twice before going into the break, as Brockport held a 10-4 lead.
 
The home team outshot its opponent 26-5 in the first half and went a perfect 8-for-8 on clear attempts. Brockport would not only win the ground ball and turnover battle in the first half, but for the entire game.
 
A pair of Cassidy Burnash scores to open up the second half, opened the lead up to eight for the Green and Gold. The team moved to put the game out of reach with six more scores before the final horn, as five of those came off of Natalie Strough feeds. The Golden Eagles would cruise down the stretch to claim their first victory of the season, 18-5.
 
Morgan Elmer made two saves and got the winning decision in the cage for Brockport. Erin Lant entered the game late in the second half, making two saves in her collegiate debut. Courtney Cunningham put together a full stat-line with one goal, one assist, three ground balls, and a team-high seven draw controls.
 
Anisa Mahmood and Samantha Burlow each posted three points on the day for Buffalo State. Mahmood had one goal and two assists, while Burlow tallied three scores as the Bengals fall to 0-2 on the season. Goalkeeper Janae Nelson had a solid outing, making 16 saves in net in the loss.
 
The No. 13 Golden Eagles are on the road again for their next SUNYAC matchup, as they travel to Fredonia. Brockport will take on the Blue Devils at 4 pm on Wednesday, March 31st.
