Softball to Open Season Tuesday at Buffalo State

History: After receiving the No. 2 rank in the SUNYAC western division preseason poll, the Brockport softball team looks continue where they left off after the shortened 2021 season where they were able to pick up eight wins. the Golden Eagles have managed to win at least 20 games in 11 seasons over the past 15 years and have made a run for the SUNYAC Championship in each of those 11 seasons.

Meet the Managers: Returning for his 22nd season as the head coach of Brockport softball is John Dumaw. Dumaw currently ranks 41st out of 418 active coaches in Division III softball with an overall record of 473-327-2 (.581%). He also holds the all-time record for the most wins by a head coach of a team sport at SUNY Brockport. Right by his side in her second season as assistant coach will be Morgan Flamholtz, who is a 2019 graduate and softball alumna of SUNY Brockport. She finished her storied softball career at Brockport with a .368 lifetime batting average, 98 career hits and 48 RBI's.

Brockport Experience: Kacie Hubbard is suiting up for her senior season for the Green and Gold and has a career total of 64 games played, 57 hits, .308 batting average and a career .972 fielding percentage. During her time at Brockport, junior Cameryn Duggan has been able to appear in 33 games over the past two years and in that time has locked up the middle of the infield with a career .923 fielding %. Coming back for her junior season at Brockport will be Molly Ryan, who appeared in eight games her freshman season, splitting time behind home plate and at third base.

Veteran Pitching: Stepping back onto the mound this year will include last years rotation of Julia Palopoli, Macy Kane, Catherine Johnson and Megan Van Dorn, along with freshmen Roseland Stroh, Syd Bolton and Tori Angelo who all look to gain valuable learning experience from this veteran pitching staff. Kane, a transfer student from Queens College, looks to keep the action rolling after having recorded a 2.25 ERA over 18.2 innings pitched in 10 games. Palopoli, a senior, led Brockport last season with 23.1 innings pitched and she has now pitched 150 innings for her career. Van Dorn, a junior, is suiting up for her third year and is ready to have just as strong a start to the 2021 season as she did last year where she posted a 1.68 ERA over the course of two games. A transfer student from Division II Millersville University, Catherine Johnson looks to make her long awaited debut for the Golden Eagles. In her first two collegiate seasons with the Marauders, she recorded 18 wins on the mound and led the team in strikeouts both years with 112.

Fresh Faces: With seven senior graduating last spring, there are several open spots up for grabs with 10 freshmen joining the Golden Eagles. The freshman class includes Erynn Hogan, Savannah McGinnis, Morgan Schafroth, Roseland Stroh, Emma DeJesus, Syd Bolton, Hannah Jacobs and Tori Angelo. Emily Willis-Nersinger joins the Golden Eagles after having stints with St. John Fisher and Monroe Community College over the last couple years. Julia Cimino is also trading in her uniform for that of the Green and Gold, spending her previous two-years playing at D'Youville.

Sophomore Season: After having seen a few games last season, but never a full season, Brockport returns seven sophomores including Ashley Shean, Madison Evarts, Morgan Skpowski, Jenna Downey, Amanda Blakely, Annie DiPirro and Olivia Hayden.

Dual Sport Athletes: After having lost both of their seasons in 2020 Olivia Hayden, who is also a midfielder for the Golden Eagle's field hockey team and junior Andrea Coyle, an outside hitter for the Brockport volleyball team, both look to get back into their competitive forms for their first taste of a full season schedule since the fall of 2019.

Quotes from Coach Dumaw: "I'm looking forward to finally being able to play. We lost five starters and it's going to be hard to replace them, but I'm looking forward to seeing what these newcomers can do. There's a lot of young talent who has yet to see collegiate experience and what we lost in power we gained in speed. Our pitching is looking good and I'm excited to see what we look like at full strength."

"Being ranked No. 2 in the western division preseason poll is exciting but it puts a target on our back. We hope to prove that we are ranked this high for a reason. Being such a short season, we need to be able to go full force, start hot out of the gates, and keep it rolling from there."

The First Show- Brockport looks to open up its season away on Tuesday, March 31st at 3 p.m. against Buffalo State in a season opening doubleheader on the road. The Golden Eagles look to get back to action in their home opener on Wednesday, April 7th at 3 p.m. Typically, the SUNYAC schedules nine-dates for conference double-headers during the regular season; however, to limit travel, the conference has split into East/West divisions for 2021. Brockport who was ranked No.2 in the west in the preseason coaches' poll and will be in the same division as Geneseo, Buffalo State, Oswego and Fredonia. The eastern division is made up of New Paltz, Cortland, Oneonta, Plattsburgh and Potsdam.
