Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's tennis team will get a chance to play the 2021 season this spring and it all gets started at home on Saturday. The Golden Eagles will host the Fredonia Blue Devils for a SUNYAC matchup starting at 1 pm at the Brockport Tennis Courts.
The Long Wait: With the fall semester of athletics being cancelled due to COVID-19, the Brockport women's tennis team had its season pushed to the spring of 2021. Saturday, April 15
th with mark the first match for the team since October 6
th, 2019. The 2021 season getting underway puts an end to the long wait for the team.
Previous Season Recap: The last season played by the Green and Gold was 2019, where the team finished 5-7 overall. Brockport also completed that year with a SUNYAC record of 1-6. The team started strong with two wins against Nazareth and Alfred to open the season. After another couple non-conference victories over St. John Fisher and Houghton, the team jumped into the thick of SUNYAC play. A 9-0 sweep of the Oswego State Lakers would be the only conference win of the year for Brockport.
They're Back: The Golden Eagles are bringing back five returners from the roster that played in the 2019 season.
Sarah Mahar and
Linda Coleman Lawrence are back as seniors this spring. Junior
Heather Phillips is also back in the Green and Gold this year. Key returners
Caroline Stewart and
Andrea Banke are set for another go around as well, this time as sophomores.
New Faces: Brockport is also adding four new faces to the team this spring. The freshman class is made up of
Mairead Hunter,
Taylor Nelson,
Kayleigh Sturtevant, and
Grace Trebilcock. Keep an eye out for members of this young group to make an impact.
Introduction to Divisional Play: As an adjustment made by the conference office due to COVID-19 policies, the spring sport season will feature an eastern and western division within the SUNYAC. The SUNYAC East is made up of Cortland, New Paltz, Oneonta, and Plattsburgh. The SUNYAC West has Brockport, Fredonia, Geneseo, and Oswego. The top teams from each division will come together for the SUNYAC Tournament following the regular season.
Season Layout: With the season starting at home on Saturday, Brockport opens 2021 with two home matches in a row. The team will face Geneseo next week before hitting the road for three straight. The regular season comes to close at home with a matchup against Oswego on May 2
nd. Those that qualify for the SUNYAC Tournament will begin play for a conference title on May 6
th.
Against Fredonia: The Blue Devils are currently 1-1 overall on the season and have yet to play a SUNYAC match. They defeated D'Youville, 8-1, before losing to Daemen, 9-0. Fredonia went 10-4 overall and 3-4 in conference during the 2019 season. When Brockport and Fredonia battled last season, the Blue Devils earned the 6-3 win.
