Keuka, NY – The SUNY Brockport field hockey team picked up its fifth consecutive season opening win after defeating Keuka College 5-2 on the road, Wednesday night. Keuka scored the first and last goals of the contest, but Brockport caged five consecutive goals in between to earn the convincing victory.
The Golden Eagles advance to 1-0 on the season, as
Katie Ziemba scored two goals in the game and
Katelynn Mello found the back of the cage as well. Ziemba's two goals moves her up to eighth on Brockport's career goals scored list. She now has 18.
The contest also saw
Kelsey Zehr and
Paige Thowe scored the first collegiate goals of their young careers. Thowe also set a career milestone marking her first collegiate assist, while Mello,
Olivia Hayden, and
Alyssa Fuccillo each recorded one assist of their own. Skylar Gilmore and McKenzie Hoyt scored the two goals for the Wolves with Laura Ramsey picking up an assist.
Freshman goalie
Ella Buchanan also made her collegiate debut and allowed two goals on nine shots and recorded four saves to pick up her first collegiate victory for the Golden Eagles.
Brockport's 14 second half shots led to three goals. Two of the goals came within the last 10 minutes of play to add some insurance to the green and gold lead. The visiting team outshot its opponent 18-9 with 13 of the 18 shots being on goal.
Brockport will return home on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for its home opener on Hoffman Day against Elmira at the Dr. Linda Arena and Class of '69 Field Hockey Venue. Hoffman Day is a day honoring the recent retirement of long time Brockport Associate Athletic Director
Susan Hoffman after 34+ years of devoted service to SUNY Brockport. All home teams on Saturday will wear customized "Hoffman Day" T-shirts during their warm-ups to celebrate her career and what she has done for SUNY Brockport.
Looking at Elmira: After Elmira's season opener was postponed against Marywood University, the Soaring Eagles will now take on the Golden Eagles to start their 2021 season. Coached by Cassidy Rourke, Elmira will return four seniors and seven juniors from the 2019 season with a total of nine newcomers to the program since. The Soaring Eagles managed to play one game this past spring in March of 2021 versus Houghton which saw Elmira record seven shots, three penalty corners and 31 fouls. Returning in goal for the Soaring Eagles in MeganRae Burke who recorded 10 saves in 13 attempts against Houghton.
