Smith's Late Goal Pushes Nazareth to a 1-1 Draw

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's soccer team opened its season at home on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles tied the Golden Flyers, 1-1, as both teams start the year out 0-0-1.
 
Down 1-0 in the 85th minute, Sydnee Smith delivered the equalizer on a direct kick from just outside the box. This laser of a shot went bar down and provided the end result of a draw.
 
Starting goalkeeper Kayla Usborne played the entirety of the 110-minute contest, making 10 saves along the way. Brockport placed five shots on goal as a team, with four coming from Smith and Camryn Pettit also striking one on net.
 
After a scoreless first half, it would be the visiting Golden Flyers that struck first. In the 55th minute of the match, Caleigh Cahoon found the back of the net for the first goal of the 2021 season. Megan McCraith was credited with the assist.
 
Despite being outshot, 12-5, in the second half Brockport kept it a 1-0 game as the end of regulation drew near. After being rewarded a free kick outside the box, the Golden Eagles would take advantage of the opportunity. Sydnee Smith stepped to the ball, and with a single strike she tied the game up at 1-1.
 
With no winner decided in regulation the match went into overtime. Kayla Usborne would go on to make two total saves in the two overtime periods, keeping the score locked in a tie. Neither team would get on the scoreboard again in this one, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
 
The Golden Eagles are on the road for their next contest, as they take on Houghton College. This game is scheduled for Saturday, September 4th at 1 pm.
