Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport volleyball team took care of business in its home opener Wednesday night against Houghton. After a thrilling third set victory, the squad earned the win to start 2021 off with a 1-0 record.
Megan Loomis led the team with 10 kills in the match, and added two blocks as well.
Kerri McHale tallied three service aces to go with a game-high 27 assists.
Madalyn Bowen got down for 10 digs on the night, leading Brockport in the statistical category.
The first set was close throughout, as the teams traded points back and forth. With the score tied at 17-17,
Ashley Allen was up to serve, helping spark a quick run to give Brockport a 21-17 lead. The Highlanders would get a few points back, but Brockport held them off to secure the opening set, 25-20.
The second set was dominated by the hosting Golden Eagles. After holding a 9-6 lead early on, they went on a tear to march towards a 25-9 win in the set. With a 2-0 lead after two, Brockport entered the third set with a chance for a clean sweep on the night.
The third set would prove to be the final of the night as the Green and Gold earned the 3-0 sweep, but it did not come easily. The largest lead of the set was just four points, in favor of Houghton as the visitors held an 18-14 edge.
As match point drew closer for the Highlanders, the home team closed the gap on the scoreboard. A clutch service ace from
Krysti McDonald tied the score up at 23-23. The two squads traded points and they found themselves tied again at 25-25.
Megan Muehlbauer rose to the occasion with back-to-back kills, giving Brockport the 27-25 win in set number three and securing the 3-0 sweep.
Megan Loomis had a team-best 10 kills and two blocks.
Myah Frostclapp finished with seven kills and also recorded two blocks on the day. Teammates
Meaghan Mastro,
Andrea Coyle, and
Krysti McDonald all registered six kills in the win. McDonald and Coyle both added seven digs in the 2021 season opener.
Kerri McHale set her teammates up all night, leading all players with 27 assists.
Ashley Allen was also great in her setter role, coming away with 12 assists in the match.
Myah Frostclapp, McHale, Mastro, Bowen, and McDonald combined to give Brockport 10 service aces.
Julia Schlundt, Frostclapp, and Loomis all earned two blocks in the victory.
The Golden Eagles are back in action this weekend when they head out to compete in the Mount Union Tournament in Alliance, OH. The first matchup of the competition will be Friday, September 3
rd at 7 pm against host Mount Union.
