Geneseo, NY – The SUNY Brockport volleyball team opened up SUNYAC play with a loss to Geneseo on the road Wednesday night. The Knights pulled out a 3-2 win in five sets, as Brockport's record is now 8-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Andrea Coyle put together a solid outing, as she led all players with a season-high 20 kills on the night. Coyle also tallied three block assists, nine digs, and a .313 hitting percentage.
Megan Loomis got up for 15 kills in the contest, while also earning a .313 percentage and three service aces.
Kerri McHale notched a season-high 36 assists in the loss to go with eight digs and two aces.
Madalyn Bowen recorded a team-high 20 digs from the libero spot.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair as the conference opponents traded points all the way through. McHale got the Golden Eagles in a rhythm with her serving late in the set, helping them push ahead for what became a 25-21 win in the opening set.
In the second the score was close again early on, as Brockport trailed Geneseo 12-11. The hosting Knights then got hot and quickly jumped out to an 18-11 lead. Geneseo would cruise on to a 25-15 win in set number two, evening the match up at 1-1.
The Green and Gold would bounce back with a dominant showing in the third set. After going up 17-13, the team went on to score eight straight points to take the set, 25-13. Brockport entered the fourth set with a 2-1 lead.
Geneseo would not go down without a fight, as the home team took an early 11-3 lead in the fourth set of the match. Brockport grinded away points to stay in it, making the score read 17-15 later on. The Knights held off the comeback attempt to win the fourth set, 25-23, pushing the match to the fifth and final set.
The fifth set stayed with the trend of the night, as it was tight all the way to the end. Geneseo got up early, but Brockport came right back every time with a big answer. There were four separate times in the final set when the score was tied. Locked up at 13-13, the Knights took back-to-back points to seal the 3-2 win.
Brockport's seven-match win streak was snapped, while Geneseo improved to 3-5 overall on the year.
The Golden Eagles will now prepare for the Messiah Tournament down in Grantham, PA hosted by Messiah College. Day one of the action starts at 5 pm against Mary Washington, with the final day featuring 10 am and 2 pm matchups with Messiah College and Juniata College.
