Mello Scores Game-Winner in Comeback Win Over Houghton

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport field hockey team defeated Houghton College, 3-2, at home Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles scored two goals in the final six minutes of regulation to come from behind for the victory.

After trailing 2-0 at halftime, Katelynn Mello netted two scores to lead the comeback. Kayli Burr also beat the Highlander goalkeeper for one score. Alyssa Fuccillo and Paige Thowe each were credited with an assist on the night.

Goalkeeper Emma Acevedo played the full 60 minutes to earn the win. She made three saves in net as the Green and Gold improve to 5-4 overall on the season.

The visiting Highlanders got on the board first, scoring with just two seconds remaining in the first quarter. Zoey Kasper scored with the assist coming from Peyton Bentley. Early on in the second Houghton would go up 2-0 with a goal from Bekah Davie, assisted by Deborah Cross.

Houghton outshot Brockport 3-2 in the first half, while Brockport was awarded one more penalty corner than its non-conference opponent.

After going down two goals, the Golden Eagles would strike late in the third quarter to make the scoreboard read 2-1. Alyssa Fuccillo beat multiple defenders before forwarding the ball to Katelynn Mello for the score.

In the fourth quarter Brockport kept applying pressure, earning six penalty corners in the period. During one of those opportunities, Kayli Burr would collect the ball off of a deflection from a Houghton defender and fire a shot past the keeper to tie the game up at 2-2.

Burr's goal came with just 5:52 remaining in the contest, but the Golden Eagles didn't stop there. With just 1:04 left on the clock Paige Thowe found Katelynn Mello for the game-winner, completing the comeback on their home field.

Brockport is back home this Saturday for a SUNYAC battle with Cortland. The match is set to begin at 1 pm at the Dr. Linda Arena and Class of '69 Field Hockey Venue.
