Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference with an 85-65 win over Oneonta on Friday.
Jahidi Wallace led Brockport with a team-high 20 points, as the team snags its fourth in a row.
Wallace added seven rebounds to go with his 20-point outing, as he was effective shooting 8-for-10 at the foul line.
David Grady III posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He also tallied two blocks defensively and shot 5-for-7 from the floor.
Antonio Alvarez tied his season-high 16 points in the contest and snagged eight rebounds. Freshman
Mekhi Beckett totaled 15 points and was lethal shooting 4-for-5 from long range.
The visiting Red Dragons took an early lead, but Brockport quickly caught back up to take an 8-7 edge with 16:39 in the first half. As the opening half of play winded down, Brockport was up 26-25 with five minutes left before halftime.
David Grady III would spark a run that was capped off by
Mekhi Beckett's buzzer beater, pushing the Green and Gold advantage to 11 points at the break.
Beckett was on fire to start the game, shooting 3-for-3 from downtown to help earn a 40-29 lead over Oneonta going into halftime. The Golden Eagles held advantages in points from turnovers, bench scoring, and long-range shooting in the first half.
Brockport held its double-digit lead for the starting moments of the second half. However, Oneonta would cut into the deficit and made it a 55-50 score with 12:35 left on the clock. It was a single-digit game with Brockport holding a 60-53 lead with six minutes left to play.
Mekhi Beckett,
Antonio Alvarez, and
Brandon Kennedy-Gay all hit shots from beyond the arc one after the other, giving the team a 72-56 lead. The Golden Eagles cruised through the finish line to walk away with the 20-point victory at home.
Oneonta was led by Michael Ortale's 27 points and 10 rebounds, notching a double-double in the loss. The Red Dragons are now 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the SUNYAC so far this season.
Brockport is back at home on Saturday for another SUNYAC matchup. The squad will face-off against New Paltz in The Vlog for a 4 pm tip-off.
