Brockport, NY – On Wednesday, November 2
nd the SUNY Brockport men's soccer team continues its postseason run with a SUNYAC Semifinal match against #14 Cortland. Kickoff for the contest is scheduled for 5:30pm down in Cortland, NY.
Round 1 Victory: The Golden Eagles defeated Geneseo in incredible fashion in the opening round of the SUNYAC Tournament. After remaining tied, 2-2, through 110:00 minutes of play, Brockport pulled out the win, 5-4, in an 8-round penalty kick shootout. After
Josh Fitzpatrick tied the tally at 4-4 in the seventh round of the shootout,
Andrew Taylor made the biggest save of the season to start round eight. Up stepped junior and Brockport-native
Nick Van Wie who fooled the Geneseo keeper with a shot to the lower-left corner to send Brockport to the next round.
Last Trip to the Semis: The 2018 was the program's most recent trip to the SUNYAC Semifinals and it resulted in a 2-0 shutout victory over New Paltz. A freshman at the time,
Matthew Stefaniw scored both of the Golden Eagle goals to lead the squad to the conference finals. That year Brockport defeated Cortland for the SUNYAC Title, 2-0, to collect its 11
th SUNYAC Championship in program history. The season finally ended after a second-round exit in the NCAA Tournament, as the Green and Gold finished 16-5-2 overall. Now the 2022 squad fights for a chance at bringing home a 12
th SUNYAC Title.
Remaining Teams: With the semifinals beginning this week there are only four teams left competing for the 2022 SUNYAC Title. The top seed from Cortland takes on the fourth seed from Brockport at 5:30pm on Wednesday. On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 Oneonta hosts No. 6 Plattsburgh on Wednesday at 1pm. The winning teams will meet up in the championship match on Saturday, November 5
th.
Who to Watch: Matthew Stefaniw scored two goals in the first-round matchup against Geneseo, giving him a team-high seven scores on the year. He leads the squad with 18 total points and is first with four assists.
Russ Domm is still second on the team with 13 points from six goals and an assist.
Max Voyer,
Warren Banks, and
Seamus Parker all have at least two goals on the season.
Top Notch Goalie: Andrew Taylor came up big once again for the Golden Eagles in the last outing, continuing his incredible season. He was able to make six big saves during regulation and two overtime periods against Geneseo. Taylor then stopped multiple shots during the penalty shootout to push Brockport into the semifinals. In net this year he has made 65 saves to earn a .813 save percentage and a .88 goals allowed average.
Rematch with Cortland: This will be the second time this year Brockport and Cortland have faced off. The first battle was a home game for the Green and Gold against the nationally-ranked Red Dragons. Cortland would score twice in each half to beat Brockport, 4-1, in the final game of the regular season. This time around the match will be played in Cortland, NY with a trip to the SUNYAC Championship on the line.
Scouting the Red Dragons: The No. 1 seeded Cortland Red Dragons earned a first-round bye in the conference tournament and will now host Wednesday's semifinals matchup. They are 12-4-2 overall and 6-1-2 against SUNYAC opponents. #10 Mateo Marra leads the team with 25 points on eight goals and nine assists. Both #7 Jack Coleman and #8 Matt Shultz have scored seven goals this season. Luke van Galen is the starter in net with 60 total saves for a .732 save percentage.
Fighting for a Finals Spot: The winner of Wednesday's semifinal match will continue its season, while the losing team's season ends. The winning squad will go on to play the winner between Plattsburgh vs Oneonta for the SUNYAC Championship on Saturday, November 5
th.
