Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team got its first win of the season on Friday night, defeating Keystone College, 92-78. Brockport is now 1-1 overall after its first week of play this year.
Mekhi Beckett exploded with 25 first half points on the way to a career-high 33-point night. Beckett's career night came on 11-for-20 from the floor, including making 6 of his 12 attempts from beyond the arc. He also contributed with seven boards and three assists.
David Grady III also had a big night, posting his first double-double of the season. Grady finished with 16 points and snagged a game-high 14 boards. Grady was 6-for-11 from the field, had four assists, and came up with a pair of steals.
Jahidi Wallace scored an efficient 15 points, shooting 60% on the night.
Tony Arnold stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, a game-high six assists, five rebounds, and two steals.
As a team, the Golden Eagles held Keystone to just 39.1% shooting from the field and 19% shooting from downtown. They also put forth a strong effort on the glass, outrebounding the opposing Giants, 51-30.
Within the first 12 seconds after the opening tip-off,
Mekhi Beckett went to work for the Green and Gold. The sophomore hit three shots from 3-point territory in the first few minutes, as he led the way to an early double-digit lead.
Brockport would eventually stretch its advantage to 26 points, as a
David Grady III score put the team up 40-14 with 5:54 left in the first half. Grady had a strong showing to start the game, recording seven points and 11 rebounds before halftime. Keystone College would find itself down, 49-26, going into the locker room at the half.
As the second half began, Brockport would get to the rim for several easy looks to maintain a comfortable lead. The team would finish the game with 48 points in the paint. Freshman
Jacob Oka would score two of his career-high seven points to create the largest lead of the contest for Brockport at, 77-47.
With time winding down on the clock, the visiting Giants would pick up the pressure in an attempt to close the gap. They capitalized on sloppy turnovers from the Green and Gold to make it a 14-point game with 2:21 remaining in regulation. Able to hold off any further comeback efforts, the Golden Eagles held off Keystone for the 92-78 win at home.
Now at 1-1 overall on the young season, Brockport prepares for its game next week against Hobart. The team hosts Hobart on Wednesday, November 16
th at 6:30 pm for another non-conference matchup at The Vlog.
