Women's Basketball Opens the Season With a Win at Home Over Medaille

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's basketball team opened its season at home with a, 53-48, win over Medaille. Brockport has now won three consecutive season openers.

Shannon Blankenship began her sophomore campaign with the best game of her collegiate career. She had career-highs of 10 points and 10 rebounds to post the first double-double of her career.

In her first game with the Golden Eagles, Zairea Hannah snagged a game-high 14 boards to go with eight points. Anna Felice led the squad with 15 points on the day and grabbed seven rebounds. Zoe Zutes recorded seven points, seven boards, and a game-high three blocks.

Brockport was relentless with its effort on the glass, outrebounding Medaille, 65-40. In the first game of the season, the team registered a higher single-game rebound total than all of last year.

The first quarter was a close one as the score was tied at 8-8 with less than three minutes left on the clock. The Medaille Mavericks would sink a pair of free throws to take a 12-11 lead into the second quarter.

Brockport exploded in the second, outscoring Medaille, 22-8, in the quarter. Strong defense, rebounding, and good looks at the rim on offense sparked a nice run for the Green and Gold. Anna Felice scored seven straight points to put the team up, 22-12, with halftime approaching. The score would show a 13-point advantage for Brockport at the break.

The Golden Eagles were able to maintain a double-digit lead through the first half of the third quarter. With some stops and a pair of baskets, the visiting Mavericks cut the deficit to just seven points heading into the final period.

Medaille kept its momentum rolling to start the fourth quarter, eventually cutting the lead down to just one point. With 4:26 left in regulation, Shannon Blankenship halted the opponent's momentum.

Anna Felice assisted Blankenship on a 3-point play, as she made a baseline jumper through contact and hit the free throw. The play created a 49-46 lead for the Green and Gold heading towards the final stretch.

The Golden Eagles allowed just five points to be scored in the final six minutes of the fourth quarter. Their defense and ability to rebound was key in closing out the victory at home. They would pull out the five-point win to start the year 1-0.

Brockport is back on its own hardwood next weekend for another non-conference game. The team hosts William Smith College on Saturday, November 19th for a 2pm tip-off.
