Women's Basketball Comes Up Short Against the Herons

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's basketball lost a tight game at home on Saturday, 57-55, against William Smith. Both Brockport and William Smith move to 1-1 overall on the season.

In just her second game since joining the Green and Gold, Zairea Hannah posted a double-double. She finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, two steals, and a block. Juan Brown nearly had a double-double as well in the contest. Brown put up career-highs of eight points and 11 boards.

Anna Felice led the team in scoring with 13 points to go with a pair of blocked shots. Felice converted on 10-of-11 shots at the free throw line. Freshman Stephanie Jean-Baptiste hit double-digits for the first time in her collegiate career, finishing with 10 points.

The first quarter was a back and forth affair, as the two teams traded baskets. After the first ten minutes of action, the score was tied at 11-11 going into the second. The second quarter was more of the same, with the score staying tied at 20-20 with 3:40 left until halftime. William Smith was able to edge out a 2-point lead at the break.

Both teams continued to battle at the start of the third quarter. The visiting Herons got to the free throw line early to start the second half to grab a 30-24 lead. They would hold a 6-point lead on the scoreboard going into the fourth.

William Smith earned its biggest lead of the game in the beginning minutes of the final period of regulation. The Herons were up, 49-39, before Brockport went on a run. Some free throws by Anna Felice and Juan Brown down the stretch made it a 3-point game with just 1:20 left to play. The team was unable to get over the hump for a comeback, falling 57-55.

The Golden Eagles are back in action on Tuesday, November 22nd for a road game against RIT. Tip-off is set for 6pm.
