Brockport Defeats New Paltz, 3-1, Advances to Take on Top-Seeded Cortland in SUNYAC Finals

Cortland, NY – The second seeded Brockport Golden Eagles traveled to Cortland for their SUNYAC semifinal match against third seeded New Paltz on Friday November 4th. Brockport entered the contest with a record of 20-6 (8-1 SUNYAC) compared to the Hawks record of 21-3 (7-2 SUNYAC) Earlier this season, these two teams played in Brockport, with the Golden Eagles winning in five sets. In this match it was Brockport who took the victory and will face top seeded Cortland in Saturdays SUNYAC Final at 4pm.
 
Brockport would come out flying in the first set, winning 25-14. The Golden Eagles took an early 4-0 lead in the set, before a New Paltz time out. Following the timeout, the teams traded points for a bit, with Brockport slightly extending their lead. A three-point run by Brockport pushed the score to 14-6 where the Hawks would use their second timeout. Once again, coming out of the timeout both teams started exchanging points, with Brockport pushing their lead bit by bit. A New Paltz service error would finalize the set for Brockport at 25-14.
 
The Hawks would battle back in the second set, winning 25-22. New Paltz surged early, opening up a 5-2 lead, but the Golden Eagles would battle back, evening the set at 8-8. After the teams traded points, New Paltz pushed for three unanswered points, before Brockport responded with three points of their own to level the set at 12. The teams would again trade points, before Brockport scored four straight points to open a 17-14 lead. New Paltz found themselves at risk of going down two sets, down 18-15, and surged for eight unanswered points to flip the script on the Golden Eagles. Brockport managed to push back, but a kill from New Paltz's Mackenzie Williams ended the set at 25-22.
 
Brockport would grind out a 25-23 win in the third set to give Brockport a lead the match. After New Paltz opened the scoring, Brockport would score eight of nine points to give the Golden Eagles a 10-4 lead. New Paltz, not wanting their season to be pushed to the brink, took a timeout to try and reorganize. Both teams would struggle to find a consistent streak coming out of the timeout, with the score getting pushed to 13-7. Coming out of another timeout, the Hawks scored five of six points, eventually tying the set at 19. Following a New Paltz point, the Golden Eagles would respond with five straight point of their own to make the score 24-20. New Paltz then scored three straight themselves, but Brockport used their second timeout and found the 25th point right after to win 25-23.
 
Brockport would take total control of the fourth set, winning 25-9, and taking the match 3-1. The Hawks had no answer for a Brockport team that looked to be on a mission this set. The Golden Eagles drove the score to 7-2, when New Paltz took a timeout. Brockport wouldn't falter though, pushing the score up to 14-6, and continuing for a convincing 25-9 win the take the match.
 
Senior Jordan Thompson would have a match-high in kills with 14. New Paltz sophomore Letisha Perez and junior Mackenzie Williams would each put up 12 kills, while Brockport's Andrea Coyle would put up 11. New Paltz junior Cate DiGiacomo led the match with 27 assists. Brockport's Kerri McHale and Ashley Allen each had 12 assists. Myah Frostclapp led the match with two solo blocks and three block assists.
 
The Golden Eagles will now face top-seeded Cortland in the SUNYAC Final. That match with start at 4pm on Saturday, November 5th.
