Women's Basketball Hosts Medaille on Saturday to Begin the New Year

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's basketball team is set to begin the 2022-23 season this weekend at home. Brockport welcomes Medaille College on Saturday, November 12th for a 2pm tip-off at The Vlog.

Recap of Last Season: Brockport finished the 2021-22 season at .500 with a 12-12 overall record and a 7-11 mark against SUNYAC opponents. The squad started the year out strong at 4-0, but lost momentum as the calendar turned and the intensity of conference play increased. Winning three of the last four games, the Green and Gold made a run at a spot in the postseason. However, Fredonia won the tiebreaker in the standings for the sixth seed which kept Brockport out of the postseason.

Coach Jones at the Wheel: Head Coach Corinne Jones is back in the driver's seat for the program for her seventh season at Brockport. She finished last year at 12-12 overall to make it the second time she has led the Green and Gold to a .500 or better record. Coming up just shy of a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament, it was the first time since coming to Brockport in 2015 Jones missed out on the postseason. Looking to get back there for the 2022-23 season, Jones added Assistant Coach Scott Foster to her staff this year.

Season Openers: The Golden Eagles aim to open this season the same way as most recent years have begun. They have won three of the last four season opening games heading into Saturday. Last season Brockport has back-to-back season opening victories against Medaille (69-50) and RIT (65-64) the last two years. To start the 2017-18 schedule the team blew out Alfred University, 83-64, at home. Brockport looks to win its fourth season opener in the last five years this weekend.

Back for Another Year: The Green and Gold brought back six players from the 2021-22 roster for the upcoming season. Last year's leading scorer, Anna Felice is back after posting a career-high 12.6 points per game as a junior. Forward Zoe Zutes also returns after leading all reserve players in rebounds (103) and blocks (22) as a freshman. Hali Lucia had the most assists last year (32) out of all returning players. Shannon Blankenship, Anna Lee, and Juan Brown are geared up for their sophomore seasons as well for Brockport this year.

New Wave of Players: Brockport is welcoming a large collection of new names to the team this season, with eight new players on the roster. The incoming freshman class is made up of Stephanie Jean-Baptiste, Makaylah Frazier, Tatum Smyth, Madison Misser, Mackenzie Higby, and Kennedy Cone. The squad is also bringing in junior transfer Zairea Hannah and sophomore transfer Brianna Cordell. Keep an eye out for which new faces make an impact this season.

Schedule Summary: The action gets started with home games this and next weekend for the Green and Gold. The first step into SUNYAC play is set for a road game on November 29th against Buffalo State. After some conference contests, Brockport comes back home for two non-conference games against Alfred State and U of R early in December. Brockport then heads down to DME Academy in Daytona Beach, FL to compete at the Mauro Panaggio Tournament. Following the start of the new calendar year the Golden Eagles jump right into the thick of SUNYAC action in January. It all boils down to the regular season finale at home on February 18th against Buffalo State. The first round of the postseason conference tournament is scheduled to begin on February 21st.

Looking at Medaille: Last year the Medaille Mavericks finished with an 11-14 record overall and a 6-10 mark in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC). Medaille's leading scorer from last season, Shyanne Trinh returns after averaging 13.2 points a game last year. Teammate Erin Hardick is back as well after leading the Mavericks with 4.2 assists per game. Center Ariea Garrett also remains in the lineup as the team's leading rebounder at 8.1 boards a night last season. Brockport defeated Medaille, 69-50, to open up the season in 2021-22 with a victory.

Up Next: The Golden Eagles are back on their home floor again next weekend for another non-conference bout. They take on William Smith College at 2pm on Saturday, November 19th back at The Vlog.
