York, PA- The SUNY Brockport wrestling team took a road trip down south to York, Pennsylvania to compete at day one of the New Standard Corporation Invitational hosted by York College.
After the first day of action, the Golden Eagles are sitting in sixth place as a team with 31 points. Brockport's
Elijah Sims,
Michael Sullivan, and
Joe Yanis all advanced through to Saturday's semifinals in their respective weight classes.
125 Pound Weight Class – Liam Bullock started off with a first-round BYE sending him into the round of 16. He fell to a major decision, 12-2, by Mason Barrett.
Isaiah Jackson wrestled hard and won by a fall in just 0:28 to start the day. Jackson went onto the round of 16 and fell by a technical fall, 20-5.
133 Pound Weight Class – Matt Caccamise also started the tournament off with a first round BYE. Caccamise was defeated by a fall at 4:13 in the round of 16.
Spencer Maja also wrestled in the 133-pound weight class, falling in the first round by a technical fall 18-1.
141 Pound Weight Class – Jaden Friel fell in a first-round effort by a major decision, 26-16.
Marquis Larmond won his first match, 4-1, and moved on to the round of 16. He once again earned a 4-1 decision to advance to the quarterfinals. Larmond was defeated by a major decision, 14-1, in the quarterfinal round.
149 Pound Weight Class – Elijah Sims jumped straight into the round of 16 after receiving a first-round BYE. Sims would earn a major decision, 8-0, in the round of 16 to advance. He then got the win in the quarterfinals by an 11-5 decision to earn his spot in the semifinals on Saturday.
Mahmoud Esa won his first match with a, 16-6, major decision. Esa would eventually lose in the round of 16 by fall at 2:52.
157 Pound Weight Class –
Matthew Cestare started off the tournament with a BYE leading him into the round of 16. After a valiant effort he fell, 4-2, by decision.
Charles Loucks fell in the first round by a, 6-5, decision.
Sam Grey also wrestled in the 157-pound weight class, but lost in the first round, 17-2, by a technical fall.
165 Pound Weight Class –
Matthew Kline started the tournament with a pin at 2:38 in the first round. He continued to the round of 16, where he lost by fall at 4:34.
Michael Fronczak also represented the Green and Gold in the 165-pound weight class. Fronczak fell 18-11 by decision in the opening round.
174 Pound Weight Class - Jared Zenie moved on from the first round of 32 competitors with a victory by pin at 2:54. Zenie's run would end in the round of 16, by a fall at 1:13.
Gavin McLaughlin fell by major decision in the first round, 12-0.
184 Pound Weight Class – Karam Ali received a first round BYE into the top 16. He fell by a technical fall, 16-1.
Jaleel Herrar also fell in the first round of the tournament in the 184-weight division, by fall at 4:14.
197 Pound Weight Class- Michael Sullivan received a first round BYE sending him into the top 16. In his first match of the tournament, he recorded a win by fall at 0:23. In the quarterfinal round he won by a 10-8 decision and moves onto the semifinals on Saturday.
Nick Franco also moved out of the first round into the round of 16 with a pin in 2:15 in the opening round. His journey came to an end by a fall at 4:12 in the round of 16.
285 Pound Weight Class –
Joe Yanis also received a first round BYE, sending his first match into the top 16. Yanis won by a technical fall, 18-3, moving him into the quarterfinals. He won by a 7-6 decision, sending him into the semifinal round on Saturday.
