Brockport Comes Up Short in Overtime Battle With Nazareth to Conclude Mauro Panaggio Tournament

Daytona, FL – Brockport faced off against Nazareth in the finals of the Mauro Panaggio Tournament, hosted by DME Academy, on Tuesday. In a hard fought battle, Brockport fell to the Golden Flyers, 79-76, in overtime.

Juan Brown scored a career-high 18 points to go with six boards, three steals, two assists, and one block. She finished the game 8-for-11 at the foul line, including a clutch make late in the fourth to send the game to overtime.

Freshman Stephanie Jean-Baptiste also poured in 18 points for the Green and Gold, just one shy of tying her career-best. Coming in off the bench, she went 4-for-11 from long range on the day.

Shannon Blankenship hit double-digits as well, scoring 10 points with a key 3-pointer in crunch time. Anna Lee was efficient on offense with eight points and four assists, while shooting 3-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from deep.

The championship game of the Mauro Panaggio Tournament was tight from start to finish. At the midpoint of the first quarter, Brockport and Nazareth battled to a 9-9 score. Mackenzie Higby hit a jumper to give the squad a, 17-16, lead after one.

After shooting 40% in the first, the Golden Eagles hit at a 47.1% clip in the second quarter. They would trail Nazareth by just three points early in the period. However, Brockport outscored the opponent, 17-12, in the second. Stephanie-Jean Baptiste finished at the rim to beat the halftime buzzer, giving Brockport a 6-point lead at the break.

The Golden Flyers looked to turn it around in the third, as they outscored Brockport, 18-9, in the quarter. Facing a 9-point deficit, Nazareth went on a 12-point run to take a 42-39 lead. The fellow team from the Rochester-area held a 3-point lead going into the fourth.

It was an exciting performance from the teams in the final period of regulation. Nazareth hit a shot from deep early, but Brockport's Anna Lee answered in a big way. Lee knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to keep the score close. In the final minute of play, Jean-Baptiste hit a big shot from downtown to make it a 1-point game with 37 seconds left on the clock.

In need of a stop, the Golden Eagles forced a turnover on Nazareth's next possession. Anna Felice then fought through traffic for a tough finish, giving Brockport a 65-64 lead. With 13 seconds remaining in regulation, Nazareth nailed a pair of free throws to retake the lead. Juan Brown stepped up to hit the game-tying free throw with only nine seconds on the clock. Nazareth missed what could have been the game-winner, as the game headed into overtime.

After a strong start to the overtime period for Nazareth, Blankenship hit another important long-range shot to keep the team in it. Trailing by six with 2:29 left to play, Brown came up clutch again with four quick points. The Golden Flyers hit some key free throws to create some space in the final seconds. A deep buzzer beater from Jean-Baptiste wasn't quite enough, as Brockport fell in overtime by three points.

The Golden Eagles conclude the Mauro Panaggio Tournament, 1-1, moving to 6-5 overall on the season. They get back home to continue SUNYAC play on Friday, January 6th for a 5:30pm matchup with Geneseo.
