Men's Basketball Continues Title Defense Against Oneonta in SUNYAC Semifinals

Brockport, NY – The reigning 2019-20 SUNYAC Champions are heading to Oswego on Friday night to play in the SUNYAC Semifinals. #3 Brockport and #2 Oneonta will tip-off at 5:30 pm, as the teams compete for a chance to play in the SUNYAC Championship on Saturday.

First Round Victory: The Golden Eagles hosted a first-round matchup against the sixth seeded Potsdam Bears earlier in the week. They defeated Potsdam, 62-55, to advance to the SUNYAC Semifinals. Jahidi Wallace was Brockport's leading scorer, finishing with 13 points and seven rebounds. David Grady III had 12 points and Devante Hagins had 11 as the only other two to hit double-digits. With both teams shooting below 35% from the floor, the free throw line is where Brockport did damage by shooting 21-for-28 at the line.

Milestone Ahead for Wallace: Jahidi Wallace added 13 points to his career total in the recent win over Potsdam, as he closes in on the 1,000 points milestone for his career. He heads into Friday's game with 966 career points, needing just 34 more points to join the elite 1,000-points club. Averaging 15.4 points per game this season, Wallace is Brockport's leading scorer and is ranked sixth in the SUNYAC conference. In the two regular season matchup against Oneonta he averaged 26 points, which included his career-high 32 points in a loss on the road.

Defensive Effort: Forwards David Grady III and Devante Hagins have consistently caused problems for opposing teams on defense all season. With 58 blocks on the year, DGIII leads the SUNYAC in blocks and Hagins is third with 35 blocks. Hagins is also causing turnovers with his ability to play the passing lanes, as he leads the conference with 73 steals. In the first-round postseason win over Potsdam, Grady had five blocks and three steals while Hagins tallied two blocks and three steals. Their effort on defense will be key as Brockport looks to defend its 2019-20 SUNYAC Title this weekend.

Postseason History: Overall the SUNY Brockport men's basketball program has nine SUNYAC titles, third most in conference history. The Golden Eagles entered this year's postseason as the defending champions from the 2019-20 season. The program has not won back-to-back championships since winning two in a row in 2001 and 2002. Since Coach Dunne took over in 2007, the team has only lost in the first round of the postseason once and has advanced to the semifinals or finals 12 times. With another trip to the semifinals coming this weekend, Brockport has now made it to the final four of the SUNYAC Tournament for eight years in a row.

Oneonta Matchup: After earning a first-round bye for the conference tournament, #2 Oneonta will take on #3 Brockport in the semifinals. The teams split the two meetings during the regular season matchups with each team winning at home. Brockport won the first matchup, 85-65, in a solid all-around team win. The Red Dragons got revenge in the second meeting, 83-73, despite a career-high 32 points from Jahidi Wallace. The Green and Gold is 5-1 against Oneonta in the last six contests, looking for another win to advance to the SUNYAC Championship game.

SUNYAC Finals: The SUNY Finals will be played on Saturday at 4 pm, hosted by Oswego. #3 Brockport and #2 Oneonta fight for a spot in the championship game, while #1 Oswego takes on #4 New Paltz for the other slot. The winner of the SUNYAC Tournament gains an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
