SUNY Brockport junior Matt Caccamise and freshman Zach Levey completed day one of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Friday. Caccamise went 1-2 on the day, while Levey went 0-2 as he wrapped up an excellent first year in the green and gold.
Caccamise upset fifth-seed Justin Lopez from Johnson & Wales in his opening match of the 125-pound bracket. Caccamise, who is making his third straight NCAA appearance, took down Lopez midway through the third period to make the score 3-2 and was able to ride out the victory to advance to Friday night's quarterfinals. He lost a 7-4 decision against Wartburg's Brady Kyner in the quarterfinal. Caccamise then lost an 8-5 decision against Millikin's Tommy Russell in the consolation round 2 to narrowly miss out on a podium finish. He finishes the season with a 20-5 overall record.
Levey lost two tight decisions in his first collegiate NCAA appearance for the Golden Eagles. He dropped his opening match of the day 6-2 against seventh-seeded Kyle Kaiser of Roger Williams. He then lost a tight 3-2 decision against Zach Thompson from Wisconsin-Platteville in consolation round 1. He finished the year with a 23-9 record.
