Rochester, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's lacrosse team was handed its first loss of the season on Tuesday on the road against Nazareth. Brockport lost to Nazareth, 17-10, moving to 2-1 on the year so far.
Jhovanny Olivares and
Rocco Santillo led the way for the Golden Eagles with three points each. Both players scored two goals and helped out with one assist in the contest.
Jack Peterson and
Carson Colucci both scored twice as well. Peterson also contributed by snagging a team-high five ground balls.
Owen VanWie and
Patrick Sheridan both had one goal and one assist to complete the day with two points. VanWie added four ground balls to his stat line.
Anthony McGee had two caused turnovers and two ground balls defensively.
John Felice went the full 60 mintues in net, making six saves in the loss.
The Golden Flyers struck first with a goal in the first two minutes of action. Brockport responded with three straight scores to take a 3-1 lead. The squad would end the first period ahead on the scoreboard, 4-3. Nazareth had a strong showing in the second to take the lead back. The team took advantage of some Brockport penalties, outscoring Brockport 5-2 in the quarter. Naz led 8-6 at the halftime break.
Jack Peterson and
Patrick Sheridan answered the call as the third quarter got going. They both found the back of the net to tie the score up once again, 8-8, with 8:54 left in the third. However, Nazareth kept up the scoring pace to earn an 11-9 lead heading into the fourth. The Golden Flyers would maintain its control of the game in the final period, adding six more goals to their total. They marched through the fourth to secure the 17-10 win to become 1-3 on the season.
Although Brockport did outshoot the opponent, 36-24, in the contest, Nazareth's goalie Carson Pickeral made 23 saves. Brockport also won the turnover battle, 14-16, and picked up more ground balls than Nazareth, 26-11. The Golden Flyers converted on 4-of-6 extra man opportunities, while Brockport was just 2-of-7.
The Golden Eagles look for a bounce back win this weekend when they travel to take on Keuka College. They face-off at 4 pm on Saturday, March 12
th.
