Women's Lacrosse Drops Hard Fought Battle Against Cortland

Brockport, NY – The No. 19 SUNY Brockport women's lacrosse team lost a hard-fought battle against Cortland, 12-9, Saturday night under the lights. It was Brockport's first loss in conference play with the team's record moving to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC.

Alayna Foos notches her fifth consecutive hat trick in the game, leading the Green and Gold with four goals. Allison Jennings scored two goals of her own in the loss, while Claire Odett contributed one goal and one helper.

Cassidy Burnash extends her streak of games with a score to 22 consecutive games in a row. Burnash finished with one goal and one assist on the night. Courtney Cunningham scored one goal and led the squad with four groundballs.

Logan Hibbard and Alexandria VanDerKar both snagged season-high draw control totals with eight and six respectively. Hibbard also led the team with two caused turnovers defensively in the game. Goalie Morgan Elmer hit double-digit saves for seventh time this season with 13 saves.

The first quarter set the tone for what became a closely contested match from start to finish. Cortland got on the board first and went on to score three goals in the opening period. Cassidy Burnash and Allison Jennings both found the back of the net for Brockport, as the squad trailed 3-2 after one.

Cortland would add another score early on in the second to make it a 4-2 game with 13:31 on the clock. Courtney Cunningham scored for the Golden Eagles to bring it back to a one-goal deficit. However, another goal for the Red Dragons gave them a 5-3 lead at halftime.

After giving up another goal in the first few minutes of the third quarter, Brockport's Alayna Foos began to heat up. The freshman standout would score three unassisted goals in the third to keep Brockport in striking distance. Both teams scored four goals in the quarter, as Cortland was up 9-7 going into the fourth.

A quick score for the Red Dragons to start the final period increased their lead to three goals with 14:27 left in regulation. The Golden Eagles answered with goals from Claire Odett and Alayna Foos as they trailed by just one goal. A pair of Cortland scores would give the team the cushion it needed to survive with the 12-9 win.

The Golden Eagles continue SUNYAC play next week with a road game against Geneseo. The two conference rivals get the action started at 4 pm on Wednesday, April 13th.
